• NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH

-tells a story
-they sometimes are little more than brief vignettes.
-They may also establish a setting or include a moral.

• DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH

-creates an image in the reader`s mind through vivid details


-allow the reader to experience the item, phenomenon or event being
described as vividly as possible without physically sensing it.

-explains and informs


-Exposition often includes techniques such as the use of examples or
illustrations to support a point or the use of some kind of ordering
(chronological or numerical, for example) to help a reader follow a
process.

-convinces the reader to make a stand or to take action.


-convince the reader of something, such as the writer's position on a
controversial topic or a proposal for a new project.

• main idea
-the gist or the thing that the paragraph wants to say
- it is usually the first sentence
e.g

Summer is a wonderful time to spend at West Beach. It is a


beach with light- colored, soft sand. The coastline goes on for
a long way and many people enjoy walking along it. Children
like to play in the surf and walk along the rocks that are
visible at low tide. This is a fun beach for people of all ages.
Basic Features of Paragraphs

• Supporting ideas

- additional information that explains, defines or


proves an idea.
-are reasons, examples, facts, steps, or other kinds of
evidence that explain the main idea
