and Application

objectives

Students will be able to :

▫ Practice how to apply concepts they learned in their own
classroom.
▫ Recall facts about applying and practicing the SIOP model
in the classroom.
#5 Interaction
Interaction - background information

▫ Interaction is the fifth step of the eight steps in the SIOP process.
▫ Because it promotes total student participation, it is one of the most
important aspects in the classroom. (Especially an ELL classroom)
▫ Teachers should have students interact with each other to activate total
student participation and to promote collaborative learning skills to
help aid ELL students strengthen their English skills.
Benefits of Having Students Actively Engaged in Interaction:

▫ Brain stimulation
▫ Increased motivation
▫ Reduced risk
▫ More processing time
▫ Increased attention
Interaction - why is it useful in an ELL classroom?

▫ Creates more balanced conversations.

▫ Students feel more comfortable in their educational environment.
▫ Helps students strengthen their oral language skills.
Interactions - grouping students

▫ All students, especially ELL, benefit from group working within

classrooms
▫ It is recommended that per lesson 2 different grouping strategies be
used
▫ Grouping strategies :
⬝ Whole class
⬝ Flexible small groups
⬝ Partnering
Grouping strategies

Whole class
▫ The first type of grouping strategy is grouping the whole class together
▫ This allows students to create a sense of community within the classroom, which
encourages a safe learning environment
▫ Allows for students to have a shared experience with their peers
▫ Encourage wait/think time
⬝ allow them to derive their answer before discussing as a group
Grouping strategies

Flexible small groups

▫ Encourages collaboration between students
▫ Allows for focused group discussions
▫ Students get a greater opportunity to practice oral language than whole class
Grouping strategies

Partnering
▫ Provides scaffolding instruction
▫ Last step before independent practice
▫ Requires the most oral language skills
▫ One on one work between two students
Grouping

▫ Homogeneous grouping (low group, average group, high group) has

serious academic and social effects on students placed in low groups
▫ You should mix lower level students with higher level students to
promote learning
Let’s practice grouping!

#6 Practice and Application
Background Information

▫ Sixth step in SIOP process

▫ Teacher gives students a chance to practice with the new
material and with careful oversight
▫ Both the practice and application tasks should aim for
practice of all four language skills: reading, writing,
listening, speaking
Important Points

▫ Materials should be divided into parts

▫ Practice period should be short
▫ When first learning, practice should be close together.
Old learning should be spaced further apart
▫ Give specific knowledge of results
Application of Content and Language

▫ Content should be presented in personally relevant ways

- keeping personal journals
- playing game to review
- creating questions for another student to solve
- teaching concept to another student
Practice and Application

▫ Use hands-on materials and manipulatives

▫ Activities that apply content and language knowledge
▫ Helps students make connections between abstract and
concrete concepts
Ways to Encourage Students

▫ Making graphic organizers

▫ Solving problems in group
▫ Engaging in discussion circles
▫ Partnering students for a project
Integration of Language Skills

▫ Oral development and language skills have to be

developed together
▫ Practice in one area to develop in other areas too
▫ Connections are best made when all language processes
are included in practice and application
Lets practice!
