CONFLICT:
Arachne was an exceptional weaver. Her vanity,
however, gets the better of her, and she boasts that her
abilities are far superior than those of the Goddess
Athena. Enraged by the insult, Athena invites Arachne to
a weaving competition to see who is the greater weaver
of the two.

PLOT:
EXPOSITION: Arachne was a well-known wool grower who lived in a small community. She is was
neither beautiful nor wellborn. In Greece, her items were well-known, and no one had ever seen
anything quite like them. Even nymphs would keep an eye on her. Many people believe Athena was
the one who instructed her.
RISING ACTION: "Reckless girl, how dare you pretend to be comparable to the immortal gods
themselves," an old woman remarked one day when she challenged her that she could weave better
than Athena. She then informed the elderly lady that she lacked the authority to speak to her in this
manner. The old woman then flung down her stick and became the appearance of Athena.
CLIMAX: Arachne weaves eternal gods warring and they overtake the cities in a competition. She
struck Arachne in the face when she was finished.
FALLING ACTION: Athena turned Arachne into a spider when she attempted to hang herself.
RESOLUTION: All spiders are descended from Arachne, and as the Greeks saw them spin their
exquisite thread, they remembered the competition and concluded that even the best mortals
should not claim equal status with the gods.
