INTRODUCTION
The Korean war was a a warlike conflict between
South Korea and North Korea occurred in the
framework of the Cold War, between 1950 and
1953, due to political differences.
“I will defend Korea as I would my own
country-just as I would California.”
—Douglas MacArthur
Historical
Context
After the Japanese surrender in WWII, the Korean Peninsula’s future now
depended on the Soviet Union and United States orders.
The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when around 90,000 North-Korean
soldiers crossed the 38th Parallel Line, the border between the Soviet-backed
Democratic People's Republic of Korea and South Korea.

● This invasion was the first military operation of the Cold War. In July, the
US military had participated in the war on behalf of South Korea.

● It is known this is a war against international communist ‘domino effect’

forces .

● At the same time, US officials worked enthusiastically to reach an

armistice agreement with the North Koreans, because they worried a
broader war with Russia and China would become a WWIII.
Historical
Context

● Finally, in July 1953, both Koreas signed an Armistice where a cease to

fire was specified.

● In what many people in the United States call the "Forgotten war,"
because it was compared to more famous conflicts such as World War I
and II and the Vietnam War and people agreed there was a lack of
attention issue.
