QB Technique - Midline Dive Option
 Components of the Midline

The Quarterback Technique for the Midline Dive Option has been divided into
four separate segments. The segments have been created in order to create precision
teaching of an extremely technical skill.

#1 The Quick Steps are the initial two steps used to establish the Quarterback platform
in a position back and away from the Center.

#2 The Platform and Draw is defined as the body position and pre mesh position of the
arms prior to the ride and read.

#3 The Ride and Read is defined as the decision making portion of the dive option.

#4 The Drive is defined as the QuarterbackÕs explosion off the mesh point.

Part One - The Quick Steps

The QuarterbackÕs initial step is a 4Ó x back

4Ó and away from the attack hole.
A. Initial Step
1. Lead with opposite foot. (Foot away from hole)
2. Clear the Cylinder. ( Fullback Track)
3. Land with balance. ( Feet under shoulders)
4. Soft step.

B. Balance Step
1. Trail foot follows naturally.
2. Feet perpendicular to LOS.
3. Land with balance. ( Feet under shoulders)
4. Soft step.

Part Two - The Draw

The Platform and Draw is defined as the body position and pre mesh position of the arms prior to
the ride and read. The body position provides the platform for executing one of the most technical
skills in football. Obtaining and establishing the proper platform will allow for the ŅMeshÓ and
ŅDriveÓ.

A. Platform and Body Position:

1. Feet - The feet are parallel down the LOS with both feet under the arm pits.

2. Knees - The knees are flexed so that the back of the hips are slightly above
parallel from the ground. This may not always be achieved because of the speed of
the play. ŅTeach hips Low!Ó

3. Hips:
a. The hips are flexed with a positive forward lean.
b. The hips create the angle of the mesh point by presenting a perpendicular
opening to the LOS.

If the angle of the hips opens beyond 90 Degrees the mesh will have Ņ too much airÓ.
Too much air makes it impossible to mesh or increases your chances of fumbles.
If the angle of the hips open less than 90 degrees the Quarterback will force the Fullback
out of the cylinder and push him into the read key.

Platform and Body Position Continued:

A. Platform and Body Position Continued:

4. Torso - The torso should have aslight forward lean with shoulders back.
5. Opposite Arm - The opposite arm should beextended straight and angled up.
Present a flat surface of the ball to the fullback.

a. The Opposite Arm will reach as deep as possiblewithout offering the point of the ball to
the Fullback.
b. The height of the ball should be greater than the middle of the numbers.

6. The Eyes - The eyes snap to the dive key on initial step.
QB Technique - Midline Dive Option cot..
Part Three - The Ride and Read

The Ride and Read are the decision making portion of the dive key. It is conducted directly after the
draw and prior to the third step.
A. The Quarterback Pre Snap Thought Progression.
1. Where is the Three Technique.
2. Run at the Three Technique when possible.

B. Reading the Dive Key ( Three Technique ) .

1. We will key the outside shoulder of the dive key for a threat.
2. If the outside shoulders commits to the dive it is an accurate read for the Quarterback to pull the
ball.
3. Once the outside shoulder commits to the dive key a ŅQÓ stunt is not possible.

C. The Mechanics of the Ride and Read.

1. From the balance Platform and Draw position.
a. The Weight is transferred from a balance position to the back foot, knee, and hips.
b. The opposite arm remains extended.

2. The Fullback creates a soft pouch to place the ball.

Note - The track of the Fullback is directly through the shoulders and hips of both center and Quarterback

3. Step two should be placed on the ground as the quarterback and fullback initiate the
mesh point.
a. Step Two should allow the quarterback and Fullback to initiate the mesh point.
b. The Feet should remain parallel to the L.O.S.
QB Technique - Midline Dive Option cot..

4. The Ride and Read takes place from back to the front hip
a. The read must be completed before the ball reaches the front hip.
b. Make the read with confidence and live with it.
c. Jerk the ball out with force.
d. The weight will be transferred to the front foot as the ride is being executed.
e. The plant foot should have tremendous flexion in the ankles, knees and hips.

Part Four - The Drive :
The Drive is the action of the Quarterback pushing off the plant leg and exploding off the mesh point
.
The Midline has three drive lanes based on which ŅMidline SchemeÓ is desired.

A. Midline Schemes:
1. Fan - The QB ducks in under the Fan Block into the ŅBÓ and ŅCÓ Gaps.
2. Seal - QB Reads three technique and pitches off the five technique.
3. Comb - QB Reads three technique and pitches off the support player.

B. The drive must be into the L.O.S.

1. Steps for Fan - Attack down the line to influence the defensive linemen.
a. Deep Foot
b. Inside Foot
c. Deep Foot - Plant and Duck under Fan Block.
d. If the ŅBÓ Gap is closed continue down the LOS.

2. Steps for Seal - Attack down the line at the outside shoulder of the 5 Technique .
a. If the 5 Technique is fast gather and Pitch.
b. If the 5 Technique is slow attack the outside shoulder of defensive end.

3. Steps for Combo - Attack down the line at the outside shoulder of the support
player. Treat like load option.
