What is Hip-hop?
• refers to a street dance
• is a style of movement characterized by bounces and rocks
executed to Hip Hop music.
•  It is unique in that it allows its dancers to perform with
freedom of movement, adding in their own personalities
• It was said to be first performed in the 1960s and early 1970s
in African- American communities.
• Hip-hop moves were inspired by complex rhythms and down-to-
earth movement style of African dancing.
Three aspects of Hip-hop

• Freestyle Movement
• Battles
• Ciphers
1. Freestyle Movement of Hip-Hop

• is a way of dancing in which the dancer improvises his/her


moves on the spot, as he dances, instead of having them
planned beforehand
• There are basically no rules for freestyle dance.
2. Battles
• involve two individual dancers competing against each
other in one-on-one battles, but you also have
competitions where teams of dancers, known as crews,
compete against each other.
3. Cipher

• Where performers form a circle to perform a


sequence of choreographed or freestyles moves.
• doesn’t need a stage or designated area in which to
take place, they can, and do, form anywhere; at
parties, in clubs, outside on the concrete, in train
stations, on a beach, in someone’s living room.
Styles/Forms of Hip-hop

• Breakdance
• Locking
• Popping
• Krumping
• Harlem Shake
• Jerkin
• Liquid and Digits
a. Breakdance

• most famous hip-hop dance


• Classified as one of the first pillars of the hip hop
movement
• This dance includes four foundational dances: top rock,
down rock, freezes and power moves.
b. Locking

• Originally called Campbell locking.


• Created by Don “Campbellock” Campbell and popularized
by his crew- The Lockers
• Characterized by sudden pauses or freeze.
c. Popping

• a technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles


to cause a jerk in a dancer’s body.
• it is the umbrella term for floating, gliding and sliding.
d. Krumping

• A street dance popularized in the United States that is


characterized by free, expressive, exaggerated and
energetic movement.
• It has four basic moves; jabs, arm swing, chest pops and
stomps.
d. Harlem Shake

• It has no strict code of dance moves.


• Joseph "No Bones" Collins danced original "Harlem
Shake" at a teenage dance night at the Union Settlement
Association Community Center in Harlem
e. Jerkin

• Is a fairly recent hip-hop dance trend.


• It involves twitchy dance moves called “jerks” where the
performer executes a of in and out leg stretches.
f. Liquid and Digits

• Liquid dancing oriented towards hip-hop but has more


laidback settings such an in glitch hop and drum n’ bass.
• Often involves smooth, ‘liquid-ish’ hand movements called
hand flows and digital manipulation, creating illusions and
movements with the fingers.
• The performer’s body is used as a contour to express
feeling or a series of interpretative gestures.
What is Tiktok?
• TikTok, also known as Douyin "vibrating sound" in
China, is a media app for creating and sharing
short videos.
•  is used by young people as an outlet to express
themselves through singing, dancing, comedy,
and lip-syncing, and allows users to create videos
and share them across a community.
• Owned by ByteDance, the media app was
launched as Duoyin in China in September 2016
and introduced to the overseas market.
Importance and Benefits of Dancing
1. Relaxation- dancing helps the mind and body to relax as the
music and surroundings take people away from their anxiety
and frustration.
2. Gain strength and endurance- Dancing is a great form of
aerobic exercise since it works many muscles in the body.
Muscles become stretched, conditioned and toned.
3. Conveying a Message- Dancing allows people to express how
they feel at a given moment.
4. Lifelong friendships and bonding- helps people to socialize
and mingle with other people. Strengthens one’s
relationships and makes one more
comfortable with others.
Injuries that may occur during Dancing

1. Neck strain
2. Foot/Ankle/Lower leg
3. Lower-back strain and muscle spasms
4. Snapping Hip Syndrome
How to prevent injury:
1. Wear proper clothing and shoes.
2. Drink plenty of waters
3. Resist temptation to dance through injury or pain.
Master the basic and correct techniques.
4. Know your strengths and weaknesses.
5. Perform proper warm-up and cool-down exercise.
