Extraction of iodine from
seaweed
Ribbon seaweeds (sp. Laminaria) contain iodine compounds which they
obtain by extracting iodide ions from seawater.

This iodine can be extracted from the seaweed by heating it in air to an

ash, in which the iodine is present as iodide.

The iodide is dissolved out of the residue by boiling water, the solution
filtered and the iodide oxidized to iodine using hydrogen peroxide.

The iodine colours the solution brown at this stage.

Isolating the iodine from the solution can be done by solvent extration,
followed by the evaporation of the solvent.
IODINE FROM
SEAWEEDS OF
SEAWATER

SEAWEEDIs a loose colloquial term encompassing

macroscopic, multicellular benthic marine algae.
The term includes of some members of the red,
brown and green algae. Seaweeds can also be
classified by use (as food, medicine, fertiliser,
industrial, etc.).
Minerals from dead sea

The Dead Sea contains some 45,000 million tons of salts rich in minerals.

The Dead Sea contains 26 essential minerals, 12 of the Dead Sea minerals do not
exist in any other sea or ocean in the world.

The high concentration causes high density of the water and consequently it is
possible to float on it.

A large part of the Dead Sea salts and minerals penetrate the skin and this
makes the Dead Sea the only area in the world in which the natural healing
method of climatotherapy is applied for treatment of various diseases.
Limestone formation
Limestone formation cascade down the hillside below the site of
ancient Hierapolis ( modern Pamukkale in Turkey ).
The city is famous for its
continuing geological
transformation.
Hot mineral springs issue
from the rock in the city,
and the water streaming
down the cliffs have
deposited limestone in
large formations, the
surface of which is made a
gleaming white “frozen
cascades”.
