BUDDHISM

CHRIS ORTEGA
BELIEFS
• Buddhism believes that life is not a bed of roses. Instead there
are suffering, pain and frustration. When people suffer, they
want to experience the goodness of life and avoid
disappointments. It is becomes a habit known as the reactive
cycle of wanting and hating, like and dislike, and craving and
aversion. This reactive cycle can be broken through the practice
of meditation, acquiring more wisdom and deeper
understanding, and acceptance of things as they are.
Customs and Practices
There are two types of meditation process.
• Samatha – is the practiced as mindfulness of breathing and
development of loving kindness(Metta Bhavana)
• Vipassana- aims to develop insight into reality.
Acquiring wisdom is by studying Buddha’s teaching, the Dharma.
Through the reflection of Dharma, Buddhists can achieve a deeper
understanding of life Buddhists believe in non-violence principle.

Dharma
• What is Dharma?
In Buddhism dharma is the doctrine, the universal truth common to all
individuals at all times, proclaimed by the Buddha and it’s a religious
and moral law governing individual conduct and is one of the
four ends of life.

Some of the major Buddhist celebration

Parinirvana Day
Parinirvana Day is an annual festival, observed in some
Mahayana countries, that remembers the death of the Buddha when he
reached the age of 80. Buddhists celebrate Parinirvana Day
by meditating or by going to Buddhist temples or monasteries. In
monasteries Parinirvana Day is treated as a social occasion. Food is
prepared and some people bring presents such as money, household
goods or clothes and it is always celebrated in the month February.
 Buddha Day
Wesak is one of the most important Buddhist festivals.
It is also known as Wesak or Buddha Day. It is a celebration
of Buddha's birthday and, for some Buddhists, marks his
enlightenment (when he discovered life's meaning). It is also a
time to reflect on his teachings and what it means to be
Buddhist and it is always celebrated in the month of may.
Dharma Day
Dharma day is always celebrated in the month of July.
Dharma Day is celebrated in Theravada countries on the full moon day
of July. It marks the beginning of the Buddha's teaching.
 Sangha Day
Sangha Day commemorates the spontaneous gathering of 1,250
enlightened monks (arahants) to hear the Buddha preach. At this
gathering, the Buddha gave his first sermon, or recitation of the
Patimokkha (the rules and regulations of the monastic order) and
consistently celebrated in then month of November.
