EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Quotient (EQ): Emotional quotient or Emotional

intelligence is most often defined as the ability to perceive,
use, understand, manage, and handle emotions.
Popularized in 1995 by psychologist and behavioural science
journalist Dr. Daniel Goleman in his book, Emotional
Intelligence.
Models To Develop Emotional Intelligence

1.EI Mixed model - Daniel Goleman

2.EI Trait model - Konstantinos V. Petrides
3.EI Ability model - Mayer, Salovey, and Caruso
Daniel Goleman’s Mixed Model
Characteristics Of Emotional Intelligence:

Self-Awareness: Ability to know one's emotions, strengths, weaknesses, drives,

values and goals and recognize their impact on others while using gut feelings to
guide decisions
Empathy: Considering other people's feelings especially when making decisions
Motivation: Being aware of what motivates them.
Self-Regulation: Controlling or redirecting one's disruptive emotions and impulses
and adapting to changing circumstances.
Social Skills: Managing relationships to get along with others
Emotional Intelligence as a Leadership Skill:

“No matter what leaders set out to do—whether it’s creating a strategy or mobilizing teams to
action—their success depends on how they do it. Even if they get everything else just right, if
leaders fail in this primal task of driving emotions in the right direction, nothing they do will work
as well as it could or should.” - Daniel Goleman

The most effective leaders are all alike in one crucial way: they all have a high degree of what has
come to be known as emotional intelligence. It’s not that IQ and technical skills are irrelevant.
They do matter, but…they are the entry-level requirements for executive positions. My research,
along with other recent studies, clearly shows that emotional intelligence is the sine qua non of
leadership. Without it, a person can have the best training in the world, an incisive, analytical
mind, and an endless supply of smart ideas, but he still won’t make a great leader.
