divides the body

0 Is closest to the

Distal

03 Is the opposite with

Facial

0 The surface that

- Labial: The
surface towards
the lips.

Lingual

05 Is
towards

the
oral
cavity. For the
upper teeth, also
known as the
palate.
Orientation Terminologies

Tooth Axis

06 Is an imaginary
line through the
center of a tooth
along the root
axis. In the
anterior teeth, one
also distinguishes
the root axis and
the crown axis
(these two axes
may not overlap).
Orientation Terminologies

In addition, some other term orientation is also

used very popular: Occlusal, gingiva, root
apex,...

Surfaces, Line angle, Point angle of
the teeth
• Facial surface: The surface that faces the
cheeks or lips. Can also use the terms:
*Labial surface: The surface towards the
lips.
*Buccal surface: The surface towards the
cheeks
• Lingual surface: The surface that faces the
tongue.
• Mesial surface: The surface that is closest to
the midline of the face.
• Distal surface: The surface that is away from
the midline of the face.
• Occlusal surface: The chewing surface of
posterior teeth.
Anatomy Terminologies (Crown)

01 Surfaces, Line angle, Point angle of

the teeth
Line angle of the Teeth: The line
angle is the line which joins two
surfaces. It derives its name from the
combined names of these two
surfaces. For example: Mesiolabial
line angle, Distolabial line angle…
Anatomy Terminologies (Crown)

01 Surfaces, Line angle, Point angle of

the teeth
Point angle of the Teeth: The point
angle is the point which joins three
surfaces. The point angle also derives
its name from the combined names of
the surfaces it joins.For example:
Mesiolabial line angle, Distolabial
line angle…
Orientation Terminologies
Convex dentails

02 Cusp is an elevation
in the crown portion
of a tooth making up
a divitional part of
the occlusal
surface.Cusps are
present in the
posterior teeth and
the canines.
Orientation Terminologies
Convex dentails

02 Tubercle it is a
smaller elevation on
some portion of
some crown
produced by an extra
formation of
enamel.A tubercle
may be found on the
lingual surface of a
maxillary lateral
incisor
Orientation Terminologies
Convex dentails

02 A ridge is any linear elevation on the surface of the tooth. It is

named according to its location.
Orientation Terminologies
Convex dentails

02 Marginal ridge: All

teeth have two
marginal ridge,mesial
and distal.These are
rounded borders of
enamel that form the
mesial and distal
margins of the
occlusal surface of
posterior teeth. In case
of anteriors,the mesial
and distal ridge from
the mesial and distal
Orientation Terminologies
Convex dentails

02 Cusp ridge a raised

part of the occlusal
surface of a
posterior tooth that
runs from a cusp tip
toward the central
dissectional
groove.cusp ridge
either run
perpendicular to the
central dissectional
groove.
Orientation Terminologies
Convex dentails

02 Incisal ridge: the

sharpened edge of a
tooth produced by
occlusal wear.
Orientation Terminologies
Convex dentails

02 Oblique ridge : a
vailable linear
elevation obiquely
crossing the
occlusive surface of
a maxillary molar.
Orientation Terminologies
Convex dentails

02 Transverse ridge is a
union of two
triangular ridge
crossing the occlusal
surface of a
posterior tooth in the
transverse .
Orientation Terminologies
Convex dentails

02 A lobe is one of the

primary sections of
formation in a
development of the
crown
Orientation Terminologies
Convex dentails

02 Mamelons are the

three rounded
protuberances found
on the incisal ridge
of newly erupted
incisor teeth.
Orientation Terminologies

0 Concave details

Fossa: It is a place

3
made up of three
inclines of the
same tooth, a
fairly wide
depression on the
tooth surface
Orientation Terminologies

0 Concave details

Lingual Fossa: is

3
the hollow on the
tongue of the
incisors and
canines
Orientation Terminologies

0 Concave details

Central Fossa: is a

3
depression in the
center of the occlusal
surface of a large
molar, formed by
three inclines of the
three cusps, or two
buccal cusps and one
lingual cusp, or two
lingual cusps and one
buccal cusp.
Orientation Terminologies

0 Concave details

Triangular fossa: ( Messial

3
triangular fossa, distal
triangular fossa) is a
depression in the center of the
occlusal surface of a large
molar, formed by three inclines
of the three cusps, or two
buccal cusps and one lingual
cusp, or two lingual cusps and
one buccal cusp, formed by the
slope chewing of the marginal
ridge and two inner aspects

3
Pit : a small hollow and deep,
formed by the intersection of the
Developmental grooves and
where the end of a
Developmental groove: A central
pit is at the bottom of the Central
Fossa, Mesial pit is at the bottom
of the Mesial Triangular fossa,
Buccal pit is at the end of Buccal
Groove.
Orientation Terminologies

0 Concave details

(Fissure, Sulcus): is a depression

3
on the occlusal surface, formed
by the inclines of two close
bulge of the crown, a gap
between the two cusps, the gap
between the cusp and the ridge . .
. , at he bottom of Sulcus is a
groove.
Orientation Terminologies

0 Concave details

Groove: at the bottom of

3
the slot, there are two main
forms:
Developmental groove: is a
line separating the cusps
and lobes.
Supplemental groove: is
less distinct line on occlusal
surface, it makes the
surface more complex but
does not separating the
cusps and lobes.
