individuals who are living, learning and working in a digital
society. In real world, authority and status may be expressed by
clothing and body language. In virtual interactions, these markers
are stripped. In cyberspace, people are more willing to speak out
and misbehave without fear or disapproval and punishment from
authority figures. In cyberspace authority is minimized.
Online Disinhibition

in comparison to communicating in- person. This could have
both positive and negative effects.

people share very personal things about themselves. It could be a cathartic
experience which gives opportunity to reveal secret, emotions, fear and
wishes.
Example: Donating for a cause or buying something for a cause(to be
donated to those in need)
Another benign disinhibition is to combat loneliness and depression
through online interaction.Social interaction may moderate negative
moods. ( Mocahan Martin and Schumber, 2003). Online disinhibition can
also enchance self- esteem and self- confidence.
TWO CATEGORIES OF ONLINE DISINHIBITION

Toxic Disinhibition - Disinhibition can also be ugly. People have

witnessed rude language, harsh criticism, anger, hatred , even threats
online.Other my even go to the dark side of the internet where they can
access pornography, crimes and other form of violence.

Cyberbullying - is bullying that takes place using electronic technology.

It can be in the form of harassing, threatening, humiliating, hassing of

peers, spreading rumors, creating web pages, videos and fake social

photos and videos of others without their knowledge and distributing them
online.

adult, business or group without a direct or implied threat of
physical harm.It is the adult form of cyber bullying.

others to see.

The term Digital Identity (DI) refers
to anything that describes a person an
individual present across all the digital
spaces that he/she is represented in

identity to others and helps them make
sense of it themselves.

In relation to identity, internet

DISEMBODIMENT refers to the identity
soul or spirit. seperate from physical body.

According to Turkle(1995) on the

internet, people can be who ever they want
to be. They can completely redefine
themselves if they want.
People don’t look at bodies or hear the accents for them to
make assumptions. All they see are the words WHAT GOES
ONLINE STAYS ONLNE. They are permanent digital footprints.

User ID lets a person associate a persistent ID for a single user

with that user’s engagement data from one or more sessions
initiated from one or more devices.

Username - is also called login name, logon name, sign-in name,

sign-on name which is a unique sequence of character used to
identify a user and allow access to a computer system, computer
network, or online account.
For them identity online is just a game. How people act in a
fantasy game is not always how people act in a real world.

Reading another person’s message might be experienced as a

voice withn one’s head as if that person’s psychological presence
and influence have been assimilated or introjected into one’s
psyche. This refers to solipsistic introjection- A nation that it’s
only their heads or minds.

Dissociative anonymity -also plays a role for online users. As the

word “anonymous” indicates,a person can have no name or at
least no the real name.

IMPACT OF ONLINE INTERACTIONS ON THE SELF
The development of the person’s social aspect can be greatly
influenced by technology due to an insufficient amount of real life
social encounters( Diaz,Evanz and Gallagher 2014).

Based on the analysis of teenagers online experience, studies

showed that others on the internet constitute a distinctive “looking
glass” that produces a “digital self” that differs from the self
formed offline. While online a person’s status in the face-to face-
world may not be known to others and may not have that much of
an impact.
BOUNDARIES OF THE SELF ONLINE
Personal boundaries are the set of guidlines, rules or limits that a
person creates to identity reasonable, safe and permissible ways
for people to behave towards them and how they respond in case
someone breaks these rules or oversteps the limits.

Boundary
PRIVATE VS. PUBLIC
In many online environments people cannot see others.
Nobody can judge the statements and images because of
the cloak of invisibility. In the public mode, the post will
be treated as open book. Because of security, many online
users are using the private mode. Invisibility is also gauge
to misrepresent one self. A man may represent himself as a
woman and vice versa.
PERSONAL/INDIVIDUAL VS. SOCIAL
IDENTITY ONLINE
Identity is made up of both personal identity and social
identity. Social identity is usually based on group
affiliation. Like in social media many peole identify
themselves as member of a certain group so that it will be
easy for them to communicate their concern or issues.
In post modern period now identity is considered as fluid,
multiple and socially constructed. Sherry Turkle pointed out that
people have different roles in different settings.

In sociology, identity theory ( Stryker 1980 ) explained that

individuals h “role identities”. It is the character and the role an
individual devises as an occupant of a particular social position.
Self is hierarchical ordering of identities by salience. The
greater the commitment on an identity, the greater the salience.
The greater the commitment on an identity, the greater the
salience of the identity . Salience of identity influences
behavioural choices in a situation.
GENDER AND
SEXUALITY ONLINE

raised in a traditional manner
are socialized to conceal their
emotions.

behavioral differences between boys
