Introduction
The first documented Catholic Mass in the Philippines was held on March 31, 1521, Easter Sunday. It was conducted by
Father Pedro de Valderrama of Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition along the shores of what was referred to in the journals of
Antonio Pigafetta as “Mazaua”. The first Mass was instituted by Christ at the Last Supper, on the first Holy Thursday. The
first Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was celebrated on the eve of the Passion. The unbloody sacrifice of the Last Supper is a
memorial of Christ’s bloody sacrifice on the cross. The First Holy Mass marked the birth of Roman Catholicism in the
Philippines. Pigafetta mentioned about a mass held on Palm Sunday which was held on April 1, 1520 during their voyage to
the west but never mentioned about Easter Sunday. This site is widely believed by many historians and the government to
be Limasawa off the tip of Southern Leyte, However, until at least the 19th century, the prevailing belief was that the first
mass was held in Butuan. This belief is maintained by some, who assert that the first mass was instead held at Masao,
Butuan. The next presenters will give their sides and/or evidences in location of the first mass in the Philippines
controversy.

Evidences that the first Mass is in Butuan

-“Mazaua” can be found in Butuanon language, meaning bright or light.

-On the statement if Father Fernando Colins, a historian, he asserted that Magellan went to
Butuan and there he celebrated the First Mass and erected a cross.
-There was a monument erected during 1872 to commemorate the First Mass in Butuan on
April 8, 1521 o3iro
-In Francisco Colin’s work, the first mass occurred the same day they planted the cross.
-10- to 1,600-year-old Balanghai recovered.
-Mazava or Mazaua is located 9 and 1/3 latitude and located South of Seilani (Leyte) which is
10 latitudes. Mazaua which is 9.33 latitude is probably located in the near Butuan city or
nearby municipality within Agusan del norte.

Evidences that the first mass is in Limasawa

- On the same day mass, a cross was erected on the summit of a mountain and according to Francisco Albo,
you can see there three island from west and southwest where Butuan can be seen on the Northern direction, so it
describes the Limasawa based on topographical details.
- According to Pigaffeta and Albo, while in the island of Mazaua they met two chieftains. Chieftain of
Mazaua and Chieftain of Butuan. So, in conclusion, Magellan didn’t go in Butuan because the Chieftain of
Butuan is not in Butuan but in Mazaua.
- They are consideres as primary sources because Pigaffeta’s work is related to Magellans Voyage and Albo
joined Magellan expedition where in the accounts that was made is reliable and true.
- According to Legazpi Expedition, Mazaua was an island near Leyte and Panaon while Butuan was on the
Island of Mindanao.
- The National Historical Institute reaffirmed in 1996 propelled by Republic act 2733 that the first Holy Mass
was celebrated in Limasawa Island.
