Modern and Contemporary Art

Abstract Expressionism
- Originated in New York City in the
1940s. It is a form of abstract
painting in which artists use colors
instead of object representations in
their artworks. In this movement,
artist commonly use soft brush
strokes to build large areas. Their
ultimate goal was to express
wisdom, mental focus, and inner
emotions. (Chilvers, 2004).
Pop Art
- Is an art movement that emerged in
the United Kingdom and the United
States during the mid to late 1950s
(MoMa Learning). The movement
presented a challenge to traditions of
fine art by including imagery from
popular and mass culture, such as
advertising, comic books, and mundane
mass produces cultural objects
(Livingstone, 1990).
Conceptual Art
- Also referred to as Conceptualism, is
art which the concepts or idea (s)
involved in the work take precedence
over traditional aesthetic, technical and
material concerns may be constructed
by anyone simply by following a set of
written instructions. (Godfrey, 1988).
Installation Art
- Is a three – dimensional visual
artwork, often created for a
specific place (in situ) and
designed to change the
perception of space. This
appeared in the 1970s which was
applied to works created for
interior spaces like gallery,
museum and outdoor works, this
is more often referred to as public
art. Once constructed, this is
expressed as a three –
dimensional setting. (Fox, 2020)
CLASSICAL MUSIC

KEY CONCEPT
Classical music emphasizes order and hierarchy, has a lighter, clever texrure than Baroque

music and is less complex. It is mainly homophonic.

ROMANTIC MUSIC
How is the Romantic era in music related with the classical era of music?

KEY CONCEPT
* Romantic music is the stylistic movement in Western classical music associated with the
period of 19th century commonly referred to as the Romantic era. It is closely related to the
broader concept of Romanticism –the intellelectual, artistic and literary movement that
became prominent in Europe form approximately 1800 until 1910.

KEY CONCEPT
Appropriation in art and art history refers to the practice of artist using pre-existing
objects or images in their art with little transformation of the original.
Dagmay
- Is a handwoven textile made
from abaca. Making it involves a
mud dyeing techniques wherein
tribe members soak their tannin –
dyed yarns into iron rich mud for
days. The Mandaya women weave
the fibers into intricate figures and
patterns depicting theirs folklores
and beliefs.
Inaul
- (pronounced as inol) is a time
honored weaving tradition of the
Maguindanao people usually made
into malong or wrap around skirt
commonly and regularly used by the
same sexes. The Maranaos of
Marawi has this weaving tradition.
