BARRIER METHODS OF CONTRACEPTION

What is barrier methods?
 Barrier methods of contraception work by
blocking the sperm from passing through
the cervix and entering the uterus to
fertilize an egg. Both men and women can
use barrier method.

 Effectiveness 83.2%
Male condom

 Is a sheath made of latex, plastic or


natural membrane which is placed
over an erect penis to collect semen.
It is the most popular barrier
 A condom is made for one time use
only
 Effective 97% with perfect use.
Advantage:
 Males are available to participate in contraception
 Condoms are low-cost
Disadvantages
 Penis must be erect before placing condoms
 To prevent leakage- males must coitus interruptus, while
still erect.
 Condoms can leak and break
 Possible allergy to latex
 Possible decrease of sensation
Female condom
 The female condom is polyurethane
pouch intended for 1-time use similar to
the male condom. It contains 2 flexible
ring and measure 7.8 in diameter and
17cm long.

 Difficult to use- 79%


Advantage:
 Can be inserted up to 8hrs before the intercourse
 Both partner are protected against STI
 Available without prescription
Disadvantage
 May twist or slip during intercourse
 Expensive
Spermicide

 Forms chemical barrier preventing


pregnancy by killing or neutralizing
vaginal secretion

Advantage:
 No prescription needed
 Can be used only or with condoms
 Penis can remain in vagina following
ejaculation
Disadvantage
 Can be irritation

Diaphragm

 Is a dome shaped appliance made of


rubber that fits over cervix
 Once it position, the diaphragm provide
effective contraception for 6 hours, then
after intercourse the diaphragm must be
left in place at least 6 hours but not more
than 24 hours.

 The cervical cup is a soft cup shaped
