\ do you know?
1.What parts of speech
8 parts of speech
A (1) noun names a person, place, thing, quality, or idea. Proper and
common nouns. Common nouns can be divided into countable, uncountable,
collective, compounds, gerund. \
A (2) pronoun substitutes for a noun. Examples: you, she, ourselves, them,
who, everyone, somebody, none.
A (3) verb works with nouns or pronouns to convey an action, including a
thought, or a state of being. A verb phrase consists of the main verb and a
helping verb. There are two categories of main verbs: action and linking or
state of being verbs.

An (4) adjective modifies or describes a noun or pronoun. Adjectives answer the
following questions: Which? What kind of? How many? Whose? Adjectives can be
words, phrases, or clauses. Pronouns such as my and each can also function as
\
adjectives: my book, each car. An article (a, an, the) is not a separate part of speech
but a subclass of adjectives.
An (5) adverb modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. An
adverb answers one of the following questions: When? Where? Why? How? Under
what conditions? To what extent? Adverbs, like adjectives, can be words, phrases, or
clauses.

A (6) preposition joins elements in a sentence. Prepositions are usually short words
or phrases that attach a noun or pronoun to another part of the sentence, showing a
\
relationship between the two, usually in time or space, Prepositions are words or
phrases, not clauses.

Amazon Isn’t Interested in Making the World a Better Place
Published February 15
The announcement on Thursday that Amazon has canceled its plan to build a headquarters in
New York City is no victory. It’s no defeat, either.
What it is, to use a Big Apple term, is meh, yet another indication that the dulcet attractions of
\
tech have lost their charm for many and that the business — which has been this country’s most
innovative and promising and often its most inspirational — is just that: a business, like any
other, out for itself and itself alone, and most definitely not changing the world for the better.
That was the cry of tech from its start — especially of the internet types like the Amazon head,
Jeff Bezos. Bankers never said they were going to make the world a better place. Nor did
makers of toilet paper or potato chips. Maybe soda makers like Coca-Cola said it in their ads,
but we were all in on the joke when they told us that sugar water would bring the world
together.

A (7) conjunction, like a preposition, joins elements. Conjunctions connect two or
more similar parts of a sentence (two nouns, two verbs, two clauses, and so on) and
often require parallel structures. Conjunctions can be words or phrases, but not
\
clauses. There are three primary types of conjunctions: coordinating, subordinating,
and correlative.
The coordinating conjunctions are easily remembered by the acronym FANBOYS.
Some examples of subordinating conjunctions include until, if, before, because,
since, while, after.

For these words to act as subordinating conjunctions, they must be followed by a
subject and a verb; otherwise, these words can act as other parts of speech, such as
prepositions.

Before you came, I was preparing this lesson.
(Compare with, “We’ll be leaving before noon.”)

Some examples of correlative conjunctions are neither-nor, either-or, both-and, not

only-but also.

An (8) interjection expresses emotion (surprise, excitement, anger, and so on). An
interjection can stand alone. Interjections can be words, phrases, or clauses.

\
Examples: Wow! Oh, my goodness! Well, bust my buttons!
