General Information
Southern Colonial style housing
originated as colonial housing in
Europe and was brought over during
the 1600’s. It then flourished in the
colonies in the 1600’s through the
1700’s. The houses were mainly made
of bricks to help keep out the heat in
the colonies. They also typically have
two stories in them. Now they are still
found throughout Southern states in
the United States.
Elements and Principles
Typically, the houses contain columns in
the front which give is a very
powerful/formal feeling because of the
use of vertical lines. Also, the house
usually is the same on both sides giving it
horizontal balance. The house could also
be considered vertically balanced on the
inside because they tend to follow the
four over four pattern with four rooms on
the first floor and four rooms on the
second floor in which both floors and the
same pattern.

Conclusion Questions
1. It was used to seem formal because of the formality in Europe at
the time it originated and was used for social status. It also was a
result from the climate of the area and its ability to keep
temperatures out.
2. The style is overall large, and the brick can keep temperatures out.
The only problem is now the price of brick, especially a large brick
house, can be well over what the house should be worth.
