CLAYMATION
INTRODUCTION

• Clay animation or Claymation,

sometimes plasticine animation, is one
of many forms of stop-motion
animation.

• Each animated piece, either character

or background, is "deformable“ made of
a malleable substance, usually plasticine
clay.
HISTORY OF
CLAYMATION

• Very first Claymation played minor role in special effects for

the silent film the sculptor’s nightmare

• Designed to spoof the 1908 US presidential election, ‘The

Sculptor’s Nightmare’, was directed by Wallace McCutcheon
and combined live-action narrative with animated clay heads.

• The narrative is simple: a rowdy group of top-hatted

gentlemen argue about who will succeed Roosevelt as
president.
Long Live the Bull

• ‘Long Live the Bull’ was made in 1926 by

Joseph Sunna pioneer of Claymation
technique.

Gumby and Pokey

• Brightly modelled and the first of his kind, Gumby was

created in 1953 by stop motion Claymation master Art
Clokey.

• Most of the characters took a cube form to allow the stop

motion modellers to stand them up for long periods of time.
Gumby himself was coloured bright green to be as racially
neutral as possible.
Will Vinton

• In 1976, clay animator Will Vinton coined the

term Claymation.

• His 1975 animated short film Closed Mondays won an Oscar

for best animated short.

• Vinton has received 5 academy award nominations for best

animated short film ,
Great Cognito
The Creation
Rip Van Winkle

• And visual effects nomination for his feature film,

TYPES OF CLAYMATION
• Character Animation

This is the animation of the characters which are rigged with

wireframe skeleton so shots can be precisely made this can
assist when arcing moves which creates a more believable
production.

• Freeform Animation

Freeform is a widely used animation Claymation techniques

which are used creatively, and it involves the clay changing form
rapidly throughout the animation into almost any form.
• Strata-Cut Animation

Strata-Cut is not more in used Claymation techniques in the

animation industry, it involves an advanced technique to create,
as the actual animation is first created within a block of clay,
this is then sliced away, fractionally at a time and photographed
this when played back, produces a fluid animation.

• Clay Painting Animation

Clay Paintings give a similar effect to a Strata Cut animation

however clay is molded and moved around a canvas which can
create a bizarre effect.
• Clay Melting Animation

Sub-Variation clay animation can be informally called “clay

melting”. Any heat source can be applied on or near clay to
cause it to melt while an animation camera on a time-lapse
setting slowly films the process.
STEPS OF MAKING CLAYMATION
• Write a Script

Animator should plan out what will the happen in the story and
find some appropriate music (if needed).

Claymation relies on numerous precise movements. Animator

can save a lot of time and hassle when he actually get to filming
when you he exactly what needs to happen in each frame. In
short creating a story board will be helpful.

• Gather Materials

The popular choice is the modeling clay Plasticine as modeling

material.
Apart from that:
- Lights/lamps
- Shaping tools (optional)
- Camera with tripod
- A table that will not be disturbed for many hours (Avoid
influence from outside factors)
• Create Figures
Animator can create a figure anyway he wants. It is easier to
create a figure with less detail, but, the more detail, the cooler
and more engaging their figure will look.

• Create a Background (optional)

Animator can build a background apart from figures for the animation.
Making the background items stationary, is safer because in case any
accidental bump happens, it won't move around.

• Begin Shooting
Set the tripod up in a stable place. A remote trigger or 2 second delay on the shutter is nice to avoid any shaking when taking
the shot.

If camera has the options, it is better to make sure that iso and aperture are locked. If they vary from shot to shot, the final
movie will look like the lights are flickering on and off.
Many animators/filmmakers utilize a technique called twos or doubles. This occurs when two frames are shot each time you
turn on the camera.

Another important thing is what frame per second (fps) animator want to use. Animator needs a good compromise between
workload and smoothness.
• Smooth Over Any Mistakes
When figures are repeatedly in use, it may begin to show cracks or thumbprints. An easy fix is
just to use your thumb and smooth out the imperfections. It helps also to wet your thumb with
water or saliva before smoothing the mistakes over.

• Postproduction
Once all photos are taken, and the lighting and other effects can be fixed. (ex: Adobe photoshop). These changes
can really enhance the images of the Claymation.

After adjusting the pictures, it’s time to string them together. (ex: Can use Adobe premiere Pro like software to
make it as a video or Photoshop to make it as a GIF)
