DIGITAL

MARKETING

Unit-I
WHAT IS DIGITAL MARKETING?
 The first approaches to digital marketing defined it as a
projection of conventional marketing, its tool and
strategies, on Internet. Satya (2015) defined it as ‘online
marketing’, ‘web marketing’ or ‘internet marketing’. The
term digital marketing became popular overtime,
especially in certain countries.
 Digital marketing is an umbrella term for the marketing
of products or services using digital technologies, mostly
on the Internet, but also including mobile phones,
display advertising and any other digital terms.
DEFINITION OF DIGITAL MARKETING
 Digital marketing is basically applying all marketing
techniques to digital channels. Different sources can be
used to promote services and products like SMS, search
engines, email, websites, social media and mobile
devices. The digital nature of this marketing method
makes it a cost-effective means of promoting one’s
business.
 The use of digital marketing depends on the
organization’s marketing objective. It could be that the
organization wants to generate more leads, build their
brands, increase sales or improve brand engagement.
Digital marketing means more than just having a website.
DIGITAL MARKETING OBJECTIVES
 Most digital marketing strategies and campaigns have
following 5 objectives.
a) Reaching the right audience

b) To engage with your audience

c) To motivate your audience to take action

d) Efficient spending on your campaign

e) Return on investment (ROI)

THE 5D’S OF DIGITAL MARKETING
 1) Digital devices – audiences experience brands as they interact
with business websites and mobile apps typically through a
combination of connected devices including smartphones, tablets,
desktop computers, TVs and gaming devices.
 2) Digital platforms – most interactions on these devices are
through a browser or apps from the major platforms or services,
that’s Facebook (and Instagram), Google (and YouTube), Twitter
and LinkedIn.
 3) Digital media – different paid, owned and earned
communications channels for reaching and engaging audiences
including advertising, email and messaging, search engines and
social networks.
 4) Digital data – the insight businesses collect about their
audience profiles and their interactions with businesses, which
now needs to be protected by law in most countries.
 5) Digital technology – the marketing technology or martech stack
that businesses use to create interactive experiences from websites
and mobile apps to in-store kiosks and email campaigns.
TYPES OF DIGITAL MARKETING APPROACHES
– PULL AND PUSH DIGITAL MARKETING
 There are two types of digital marketing and one of these
is pull digital marketing. It aims to encourage consumers
to come to you by visiting your business or making a call
to action. Some of the common examples of pull digital
marketing are websites and other internet- based mediums.
Pull marketing is often called inbound marketing.
 Another type of digital marketing is push digital
marketing. It pushes the marketing information directly to
your customers. Common examples include SMS, email
and RSS (Really Simple Syndication-an XML-based
format for sharing and distributing Web content) that target
the customer with a customized message. Push marketing
can also be called outbound marketing.

EVOLUTION OF DIGITAL MARKETING
WEBSITE
 A website is a collection of publicly accessible,
interlinked Web pages that share a single domain name.
Websites can be created and maintained by an individual,
group, business or organization to serve a variety of
purposes.
 It is a place connected to the Internet, where a company,
organization, etc. puts information that can be found on
the World Wide Web.
 Together, all publicly accessible websites constitute the
World Wide Web.
 Although it is sometimes called “web page,” this
definition is wrong, since a website consists of several
webpages. A website is also known as a “web presence”
or simply “site”.
CONT…
Originally, websites were categorized by their top-level
domains. Some examples include:
 Government agency websites = .gov

 Educational institutions’ websites = .edu

 Nonprofit organizations’ websites = .org

 Commercial websites = .com

 Information sites = .info

The first website was created in 1990 by Tim Berners-

Lee, a British physicist at CERN.
TYPES OF WEBSITES
 1. Static Information Website
 This type of website is for the information purpose only.
It contains Business or general information of an
Organization or Service. Static means without any
connectivity to a database. Content of this website can
only be changed from the HTML editors in the hosting
control panels or Local HTML Editors.
 Business owners, who want to provide information about
the company profile, products and services with official
contact details to the users on web, use this type of
website. Developers usually charge some money to make
changes in such websites.
2. DYNAMIC INFORMATION WEBSITE
 This type of website is also called a Content
Management System. There are many CMS Tools
available on internet. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal etc. are
famous CMS tools which can be used to change the
content of any website, add pages, add posts, add media
etc. Above mentioned coding languages and frameworks
can also be used to create such dynamic websites. These
websites have database. MySql, MS-Sql server,
MongoDB, Sqlite etc. are some commonly used
databases in dynamic applications.
3. SOCIAL NETWORKING AND
COMMUNITY WEBSITES
 Social Networking and Community Websites are one of
the most common websites being used now a days. A
famous example is Facebook. Some other famous names
are Twitter, Linked in etc. These websites provide a
platform where people sharing common interests can
connect with each other. Website of a college is also a
social networking website where new and old students
can interact with each other. Users can create groups,
pages; forums etc. and people interested in the content of
that group can join and participate in group posts.
4. E-COMMERCE WEBSITES
 E-Commerce stands for Electronic Commerce or Online
Commerce. Commerce refers to the commercial
activities that are performed online. Majority of startups
are based on Online Selling of Products and Services.
People book rail tickets, flight tickets and hotels online.
Shopping of Groceries, Electronics Item, Apparels and
almost everything online is very common now a days.
5. BROCHURE WEBSITES
 A brochure website can be defined as an extension of a
business’s sales brochure. Typically, a brochure website
will provide information on a business such as who they
are, what they do and where they are located. As
opposed to an e-commerce site, a brochure website does
not actually sell its products or services on the site. The
purpose of the site is to display company’s goods and
services to influence customer’s decisions.
6. PORTFOLIO WEBSITES
 Portfolio websites are created by/for Artists, Music
Bands, Authors, Photographers or any professional
service provider. A portfolio website contains
introductory information of the person / enterprise,
professional experience and mainly detail of the works
performed by them with Images, Videos and Trials etc.
Before planning a Digital Marketing strategy for
portfolio websites an in-depth keyword research,
competitor analysis and understanding the basics of
services offered is very important.
7. CLASSIFIEDS WEBSITE
 Classified websites are those website which allow users
to post classified advertisement on their websites.
Classifieds can be also called Categorized in this case.
There are various categories and sub categories in this
kind of website. Users post Buy, Sell, Rent or
Requirement related advertisement on online classifieds
website. These ads can be searched using specific
keywords and category filters. Information like
Business / Product Name, Email, Phone, Business
Address etc. are usually taken while posting ads.
8. ENTERTAINMENT WEBSITES
 An entertainment website usually has the goal of driving
high amounts of traffic to the site in order to make
money from advertisements or affiliates. These websites
tend to always be centered around content, whether that’s
video content, text-based content or a combination of
them both.
 A great example of a video-based entertainment website
is Youtube. Youtube’s gains millions of views daily from
user-generated content.
KEYWORDS
 When a potential consumer goes to a search engine like
Google to look for something, they type in words or
phrases to guide their search. These are keywords: the
key terms website users enter to find what they are
looking for.
 A keyword is a term used in digital marketing to describe
a word or a group of words an Internet user uses to
perform a search in a search engine or search bar.
TYPES OF KEYWORDS
 1. Short-tail keyword
 Short-tail keywords are broad phrases people commonly use
in their searches. These usually consist of one or two words.
Their length makes them less specific search terms. However,
this type of keyword is relatively standard. For example,
when we search “Cat” or “White flower”, these are
considered short-tail keywords.
 2. Mid-Tail Keywords

 The mid-tail keywords are a compromise and try to balance

between the high-ranking short-tail keywords and the traffic-
generating long-tail keywords. For example, if a short-tail
keyword is “bread” and the long-tail keyword is “buy bread
in Connecticut”, the mid-tail keyword will simply be “buy
bread”. Usually, these keywords are aimed at those who are
looking for information but aren’t quite ready to follow
through with the search results.
CONT…
 3. Long-tail keyword
 Long-tail keywords are more specific, and thus, less
common than the short or mid-tail ones. As these types
of keywords focus on a niche, the conversion rate is very
high. Although they might get a lot less search hits, most
people who are looking for such specific terms have
already made up their mind about needing to make the
transaction.
 For example, “4 x 12 Bisleri mineral water”, this
definitely means the searcher is looking for websites that
sell this mineral water.
CONT…
 4. Long-Term Evergreen Keywords
 “Evergreen” simply means something that is long-term
and sustainable. Content that doesn’t become irrelevant
with time is known as evergreen content. Similarly,
keywords related to such content are known as evergreen
keywords.
 For example, an article on “10 DIY Ways To Make Your
Own Soap” will not become obsolete anytime in the
foreseeable future. And thus, the keyword “Make DIY
Soaps” will not become obsolete either.
CONT…
 5. Short-Term Fresh Keywords
 Short-term fresh keywords are those that have been in
the news or been hyped over social media very recently.
For example, a mega release of 2019 was “Avengers:
Endgame”. Writing content on the film or any content
related to it would have ensured a steady flow of traffic
for some time.
 Such types of keywords can be used to gather an
explosive amount of search conversions within a very
short span, but they fall even more rapidly once the hype
dies down. It is expendable content, written with an
expiration date in mind.
CONT…
 6. Customer Defining Keywords
 Customer defining keywords are the types of keywords
that define your customers or at least identify how your
customers define themselves. It also includes defining
your customers and thus targeting the right people. Only
by understanding this can one build a business that
answers the needs of the customers rather than trying to
find a customer who may or may not need your services.
 For example if your business is about scuba diving then
some of your customer defining keywords would be:
Scuba Diver/s or underwater photographer etc.
CONT…
 7. Geo-Targeting Keywords
 As the name suggests, these are words that focus on a particular
location. These types of keywords lead to results that are localized,
leading to local businesses and local content. For example: “mobile
repairing shop in Kanpur”.
 8. Intent Targeting Keywords

 Keywords specifically designed to match the intent of the user when

searching a particular phrase are known as intent targeting keywords.
There are three basic types of search query:
 Informational – searches performed to answer questions or learn
something
 Navigational – searches performed to locate a specific website

 Transactional – searches performed to buy something

 Usually, the idea behind these types of keywords is to take the

transactional queries and generate as many leads from them as possible.
 Examples of “buy now” keywords include: Buy, Discounts, Deals,
Coupons, Free shipping etc.
CONT…
 9. LSI Keywords
 LSI stands for Latent Semantic Indexing. These are
conceptual terms that search engines use to understand
the content of any website at a deeper level. For
example, if you wrote an article about “Eggs Benefit”
and failed to mention the word “food” anywhere, Google
is still capable of identifying the page content as food-
related.
 In the earlier days, search engines used to categorize and
identify pages based 100% on the keywords mentioned
on the page. With the advance in language processing,
that is no longer the case.
CONT…
 10. Phrase Match Keywords
 Simply put, phrase match looks for exact matches within
the search parameter to trigger an ad. When you open a
website after having searched for “Beauticians who do
hair as well as makeup” and an ad pops up showing
makeup products, it is a phrasal match that is happening
in the background.
WEB HOSTING
 Web hosting is a service that allows organizations and
individuals to post a website or web page onto the Internet.
 Web hosting is a necessity for any website — it is the
physical location of your website on the Internet, an online
storage center that houses the information, images, video,
and other content that comprises your website.
 A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service
that allows individuals and organizations to make their
website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are
companies that provide space on a server owned or leased
for use by clients, as well as providing Internet
connectivity, typically in a data center.
 Web hosting is the place where all the files of your website
live. It is like the home of your website where it actually
lives.
TYPES OF HOSTING
 1. Shared hosting
 Shared hosting is perfect for entry-level website hosting.
This is where your website will be stored on the same
server as multiple other websites. With a shared hosting
plan, all domains share the same server resources, such
as RAM (Random Access Memory) and CPU (Central
Processing Unit). However, because all resources are
shared, the costs of shared hosting plans are relatively
low, making them an excellent option for website owners
in their beginning stages.
 Pros: Budget-friendly plan.

 Cons: Limited space, compromised speed, and security.

CONT…
 2. Virtual private server (VPS) hosting
 A VPS hosting plan is the ultimate middle ground between a
shared server and a dedicated server. It’s ideal for website owners
that need more control, but don’t necessarily need a dedicated
server. VPS hosting is unique because each website is hosted
within its own space on the server, though it still shares a
physical server with other users. While VPS hosting provides
website owners with more customization and storage space,
they’re still not able to handle incredibly high traffic levels or
spikes in usage meaning that the site performance can still be
affected by other sites on the server.
 Pros: Secure, Option to get more server resources anytime as
your business grows.
 Cons: Expensive for small businesses and beginners.
CONT…
 3. Dedicated server hosting
 Dedicated hosting gives website owners the most control
over the server that their website is stored on. That’s
because the server is exclusively rented by you and your
website is the only one stored on it. This means that you
have full root and admin access, so you can control
everything from security to operating system that you run.
However, all that control comes with a price. Dedicated
servers costs are one of the most expensive web hosting
options.
 Pros: Full storage, bandwidth, and full control over the
server resources, more secure.
 Cons: Not a cost-effective plan for small companies.
DOMAIN/ DOMAIN NAME
 Domain name is the address of your website that people
type in the browser URL bar to visit your website. In
simple terms, if your website was a house, then your
domain name will be its address.
 A domain name can be any combination of letters and
numbers, and it can be used in combination of the various
domain name extensions, such as .com, .net and more.
 The domain name must be registered before you can use
it. Every domain name is unique. No two websites can
have the same domain name. If someone types in
www.yourdomain.com, it will go to your website and no
one else's.
CONT…
 The Internet is a giant network of computers connected to each
other through a global network of cables. Each computer on
this network can communicate with other computers. To
identify them, each computer is assigned an IP address. It is a
series of numbers that identify a particular computer on the
internet. A typical IP address looks like this: 66.249.66.1
 Now an IP address like this is quite difficult to remember.
Imagine if you had to use such numbers to visit your favorite
websites.
 Domain names were invented to solve this problem. Now if you
want to visit a website, then you don’t need to enter a long
string of numbers. Instead, you can visit it by typing an easy to
remember domain name in your browser’s address bar. For
example, www.google.com
DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM
 DNS, or “Domain Name System,” is one of the most
important parts of The Internet today. DNS is essentially
a server or hierarchical configuration of servers that acts
as a “phone book” for a network. DNS translates a
hostname (name of a computer) to an IP address (“phone
number” of a computer).
 If you type https://www.google.com in your browser,
your browser doesn’t see it as words like we see it. Your
browser sees the IP address, just as when you select a
contact in your cell phone, your cell phone sees a phone
number.
WORDPRESS
 WordPress is an open source Content Management
System (CMS), which allows the users to build dynamic
websites and blogs. Wordpress is the most popular
blogging system on the web and allows updating,
customizing and managing the website from its back-end
CMS and components.
 WordPress is the simplest, most popular way to create
your own website or blog. In fact, WordPress powers
over 40.0% of all the websites on the Internet. More than
one in four websites that you visit are likely powered by
WordPress.
 WordPress has some distinct advantages that have made
it the dominant one. The most important is that
WordPress is completely free and open-sourced. Meaning
you can freely use and modify it to your heart’s content.
WHAT IS CONTENT MANAGEMENT
SYSTEM (CMS)?
 The Content Management System (CMS) is a software
which stores all the data such as text, photos, music,
documents, etc. and is made available on your website. It
helps in editing, publishing and modifying the content of
the website.
 WordPress was initially released on 27th May, 2003 by
Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. WordPress was
announced as open source in October 2009.
BUILDING A WEBSITE IN WORDPRESS
 Step 1: Getting a Domain Name
 To create a WordPress website, you’ll need a domain
name for your website. A domain name is basically the
address of your website on the internet. It helps the
internet users find your site on the web.
 There are tons of domain name registrars where you can
buy a domain name. For example: Namecheap. Go to
Namecheap.com and enter your selected name in the bar
and use the search function. After that, it’ll show the
available options along with the pricing. Once you find a
domain name that’s good as well as available, you can
just click on the ‘Add to cart’ button.
STEP 2: GETTING A WEB HOSTING
 Now that you have your domain name setup, we can
move on to the second step, web hosting. While a
domain name is like the address of your website, the
hosting where your site is actually located. Basically,
web hosting is storage that contains all the files of your
website. Once they’ve been stored there, visitors will be
able to access your site. Therefore, choosing good web
hosting is a very crucial step in creating your WordPress
website. For example: BlueHost
STEP 3: INSTALL WORDPRESS ON
YOUR HOSTING ACCOUNT
 With your domain name and hosting ready, now you can
finally get started with installing WordPress software.
It’s the major step in creating a WordPress website. For
example, if you have bought webhosting from BlueHost
then go to Bluehost.com and click on the ‘Login’ button
at the top menu. After that, enter your email and
password that you received earlier and log into your
hosting account. When you’re logged in, you’ll see the
Bluehost dashboard. Now to create a WordPress site,
click on the ‘My Sites’ option from the sidebar. Now
click on the ‘Create Site’ button on the top-right corner
& all you need to do now is enter your Site Name and
Tagline.
STEP 4: LOG INTO WORDPRESS
DASHBOARD
 Next, you must log in to your WordPress website
dashboard to carry out further tasks. With Bluehost and
some other best WordPress hosts, you can get a direct
link to login to your site. Clicking on the ‘Log into
WordPress’ button will directly take you to your
WordPress dashboard. After that, enter the WordPress
login credentials that you received earlier. Next, you’ll be
able to access your WordPress Dashboard, which is
where you can manage your website.
 Everything from writing articles, to managing users, to
even customizing your website is done here. You can see
all the options neatly laid out in the sidebar on the left.
Let’s go through these options one by one:
CONT…
 a) Posts: You can add, edit, and manage all kinds of posts for your
website from here.
 b) Pages: This is where you can create, edit, and manage the static
pages, such as ‘About Us’, and ‘Contact Us’ for your website.

including the design, menus, widgets, and more.
 f) Plugins: If you wanted to add more features to your site, you can go
here and manage your plugins.
 g) Users: This option allows you to manage the different user accounts
registered to your website.
 Now that you installed WordPress on your hosting account and also
accessed the dashboard but it’s not complete yet. Designing your site,
adding content, making it SEO-friendly, and secure, etc. are the steps
you’re yet to finish.
STEP 5: CHOOSE A WORDPRESS THEME &
START CUSTOMIZING YOUR SITE
 Now it’s time to start designing your WordPress site. You
can customize everything in WordPress to make it look
just the way you want. To do so, you’ll make use of a
WordPress theme or template.
 In simple terms, a WordPress theme provides a pre-
designed look for your website and its posts and pages.
It’s the main design layout or the integral part of your
site’s outlook. As the theme is the core of your site’s
appearance, you must carefully choose a theme.
Choosing the perfect theme is a crucial step in creating a
WordPress website.
STEP 6: ADDING FEATURES WITH
WORDPRESS PLUGINS
 WordPress plugins are basically additional pieces of
software that you can add to your new WordPress site.
By doing so, you’ll be able to add new features to your
website. You can find a ton of plugins for free on the
official WordPress website. In fact, the official
WordPress plugin repository contains over 57,000
plugins to choose from. You also have third-party sites
like WPEverest and CodeCanyon where you can
purchase premium themes with a lot more features as
well as dedicated support.
 Some amazing WordPress Plugins are:
CONT…
 a) Everest Forms: With this plugin, you can create all
kinds of contact forms for your WordPress website with
ease.
 b) User Registration: As its name says, this plugin lets
you create user registration and login forms, user profile
pages, etc. in WordPress.
 c) WP Rocket: This plugin can help significantly
improve your site’s performance through proper caching.
 d) Elementor Page Builder: Elementor is a drag-and-
drop page builder plugin with which you can create
beautiful looking web pages with absolutely zero
codings.
STEP 7: CREATING POSTS AND PAGES
IN WORDPRESS
 Now, you can immediately start adding content. That is
usually done in two possible ways; posts and pages.
 WordPress Posts appear in the Blog section of your site.
They can be used for all sorts of content depending on the
niche of your website. They are arranged in reverse
chronological order so the newest posts will be found at
the top. For example, blog articles on our blog.
 WordPress Pages, on the other hand, are used for one-off
content that doesn’t need to be updated or changed. This
includes timeless content such as ‘About Us’, ‘Services’,
‘Contact Us’, which will generally remain the same as
time goes by. Most websites will use a combination of
Posts and Pages.
STEP 8: MANAGING WORDPRESS
SECURITY
 Now that you’ve created your own WordPress website,
added content to it, you’re almost done. But there a few
really important things you should work on immediately.
For example, security, SEO, etc. keeping your website
secure is extremely important. There are some easy steps
you can take that’ll make things much better.
 Keep WordPress Updated

 Keep your Themes and Plugins Updated

 Backup your Websites Regularly

 Limit Login attempts

STEP 9: IMPROVING VISIBILITY WITH
SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (SEO)
 Search Engine Optimization means to optimize your
website and its content so that it will rank high in the
search results on search engines like Google. Basically, it
means to make your website more search engine
friendly. If you want to ensure that your site has a large
audience, then it’s vital that your SEO is good. After all,
if people can’t find your website on Google, you’re
going to get much fewer visitors. There are some
absolutely amazing plugins that you can install to make
the whole thing much easier like Yoast SEO, The SEO
Framework etc.
WHAT IS A BLOG?
 A blog (a shortened version of “weblog”) is an online
journal or informational website displaying information
in reverse chronological order, with the latest posts
appearing first, at the top. It is a platform where a writer
or a group of writers share their views on an individual
subject.
 As a business, you rely on consumers to keep buying
your products and services. As a new business, you rely
on blogging to help you get to potential consumers and
grab their attention. Without blogging, your website
would remain invisible, whereas running a blog makes
you searchable and competitive.
 So, the main purpose of a blog is to connect you to the
relevant audience. Another one is to boost your traffic
and send quality leads to your website.
 Personal blogs: The personal blog, an ongoing diary or
commentary by an individual, is the traditional, most common
blog.

 Corporate blogs: A blog can be private, as in most cases, or it

can be for business purposes.

 Question blogging: It is a type of blog that answers questions.

 By Media Type: A blog comprising videos is called a vlog, one

comprising links is called a link log, a site containing a portfolio
of sketches is called a sketch blog or one comprising photos is
called a photo blog.
