Integration by Substitution
Section 5.2
Integration by Substitution
• It reserves the chain rule of differentiation.
• It is used when the integrand is a product of a
function and it’s derivative.
Steps of Integration by Substitution
1. Identify the function in the integrand, which is assumed
to be u. One of the following can be u:
− The expression with a whole power.
− The quantity in the denominator.
− The power of e.
2. Differentiate u and make du the subject.
3. Replace everything in the original integrand by
substituting u and du.
4. Integrate the resulting integrand.
5. Replace u by the original function.
