A sampling distribution describes the probability distribution of a statistic calculated from random samples drawn from a population. It shows the different outcomes that could occur for a statistic when calculating it from multiple samples. Sampling distributions are important for statistical inference because researchers collect sample data to estimate population parameters. The central limit theorem states that under certain conditions, the sampling distribution of the mean of random samples will be approximately normal, even if the population is not normally distributed.

• What does it mean?
A sampling distribution is a probability distribution of a statistic obtained from a larger number of samples drawn from a specific population. The sampling distribution of a given population is the distribution of frequencies of a range of different outcomes that could possibly occur for a statistic of a population. SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION • Why is it important? Sampling distributions are important for inferential statistics. In practice, one will collect sample data and, from these data, estimate parameters of the population distribution. Thus, knowledge of the sampling distribution can be very useful in making inferences about the overall population. The overall shape of the distribution is symmetric and approximately normal. There are no outliers or other important deviations from the overall pattern. The center of the distribution is very close to the true population mean. SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION If we have two independent populations with means μ1 and μ2 , and variances σ1 2 and σ2 2 , and If X-bar1 (𝒙ഥ𝟏) and X-bar2 (𝒙ഥ𝟐) are the sample means of two independent random samples of sizes n1 and n2 from these populations: Then the sampling distribution of:
is approximately standard normal, if the conditions of the central limit theorem
apply. If the two populations are normal, then the sampling distribution of Z is exactly standard normal.
