Every elements in the set of inputs, there corresponds one and only one
element in the set of outputs. However, different elements in the set of
inputs may produce the same element in the set of outputs.

Rule in Evaluating a Function

Replace every x in the function rule f(x) with the
given replacement value, then, simplify the resulting
numerical expression.

Piecewise Function

a. f(0) = (0) + 2  b.

f(0)= 2
 c.

a.f(X) =x+2
Another Example:
Given f(x) = x2 + 6 and g(x) = 2x – 1, find
a) (f ∘ g)(x)
b) (g ∘ f)(x)
Solution:
a) (f ∘ g)(x)
f(2x – 1) = x2 + 6
  = (2x – 1)2 + 6
  = 4x2 – 4x + 1 + 6
  = 4x2 – 4x + 7
b) (g ∘ f)(x)
  g(x2 + 6) = 2x – 1
  = 2(x2 + 6) – 1
  = 2x2 + 12 – 1
  = 2x2 + 11
Composition of Functions

If you plug in "1" for the x in

the above, you will get:
( f o g)(1) = –2(1)2 + 13
= –2 + 13 = 11
