DATA MIGRATION

IN ERP
IMPLEMENTATION
Data Migration?
ERP data migration is the process of transferring data from its original sources to the ERP
system’s database. It often involves moving data from a variety of different systems,
formats and storage types into a single, common structure.
The data migration process can be complex and time-consuming. It’s important to plan
carefully and do it right: Underestimating the time and effort required can delay the entire
ERP implementation. And the accuracy and completeness of the transferred data is
critical, because so many parts of the business—customer satisfaction, decision-making,
supply chain and partner relationships—will rely on the database.

TYPES OF DATA MIGRATION

STORGE MIGRATION

Storage migration is where business migrates data from one storage location to another. It means moving data
from one medium to another.

DATABASE MIGRATION

Database migration involves moving from one DBMS to another or upgrading from the current version of the
same DBMS.

APPLICATION MIGRATION

It occurs when an organization goes through a change in application software or changes an application
vendor.
CLOUD MIGRATION

It concerns the movement of data or application from an on-premises location to the cloud or from one cloud
environment to another.

BUSINESS PROCESS MIGRATION

It requires the movement of business application and metrics to a new environment.

DATA CENTER MIGRATION

It relates to movement of data from the old data center infrastructure to new infrastructure equipment at the
same physical location.

MIGRATION
METHODS ➔ ELECTRONIC METHOD

Two primary methods are used for

migrating data from the legacy systems to ➔ MANUAL METHOD
the new ERP database.
ELECTRONIC METHOD

In some cases, a migration is relatively straightforward, with almost all relevant

data coming from one file and going to another.

In other cases, the situation becomes much more complex. Sometimes the
Information will come from one file and it will split into several different
Files in the new ERP system.
MANUAL METHOD

The size of the database often plays a key role in using this strategy

If the database is very small ,it can often be much quicker and less expensive to
simply enter the data manually instead of trying to find an electronic solution
DATA MIGRATION AS AN ENABLER FOR
ORGANIZATIONAL GROWTH
Designing and performing a solid data migration process is state of art and requires highly skilled
personnel and mature processes at a minimum. Recognizing the importance and complexity of data
migration and acting accordingly is a must for executives who want to be in ‘control’ of their
professional company. It is important that data migration should not be seen as solely an IT function
but also (and more heavily) a business requirement that has a significant impact on a company’s
daily business.

Data migration will benefit the organization in various ways:

● Data Modeling: identification and mapping of data relationships (referential integrity)
as a result of the data landscape exposure.
● Data Governance: appointment of data owners and associated roles and
responsibilities.
● Efficiency: less idle search time and a lower data footprint as a result of the (partly)
renewed IT architecture.
