1.Definition of Technical Writing

Technical writing is a type of writing where the

author is writing about a particular subject that
requires direction, instruction, or explanation. This 3

style of writing has a very different purpose and

different characteristics than other writing styles.
2.Importance of Technical Writing

Technical writing is writing done to educate, inform or direct

someone on how to do something. It's significantly different
from other writing types because technical writing is

3.1.End-User
Documentation
It provides instructions for
the end-user of a given
product. These instructions
need to be easily understood 6

by a non-technical reader but

still require technical
expertise. For example, a setup
and installation guide.
3.2.Traditional Technical Writing
Traditional technical writing is written by an audience
with specific expertise for their peers. Dive into a few
examples of traditional technical writing: 7
▹an analysis of a legal case for other lawyers
▹a summary of a series of medical experiments to be
published in a journal of medicine
▹an industry article for a trade publication
3.3.Technical Marketing
Communications
Sometimes a technical writer needs to contribute to the marketing
materials for a product. In that situation, the writer needs to communicate
their expertise in a more user-friendly language to help the prospective
buyer understand and take an interest in the product. For instance:
chain email to promote a new cell phone coming to the market
8
flyer introducing a cutting-edge exercise tracker to the market
a sales pitch to a new potential client about a new type of computer
hardware or software

3. Hard-disk Drive
Your computers hard disk drive is like an audio CD that
you possess at home – except your computer can read and 11
write to it. In other words, your computer can take data
from your hard drive (to process it in the CPU or place it
in RAM to work with).
