PREPARATION

• Proximal surfaces of posterior teeth ( premolars and molars)

• 11 line angles

Steps of cavity preparation
• Outline form
• Resistance form
• Retention form
• Convenience form
Outline form
Occlusal outline form
• Pulpal floor should be flat
• Buccal and lingual walls should be slightly occlusally converging
• Isthmus width should not be more than 1/4th of the intercuspal distance
• Occlusal dovetail
• Initial depth should be 1.5-2 mm
Resistance form
• Flat pulpal and gingival floors
• Restricting extension of walls and preserving strong cusps
• Rounding off of internal line angles (including axio-pulpal line angle)
• Adequate thickness of restorative material
Retention form
• Occlusal convergence of buccal and lingual walls
• Dovetail provides retention against lateral displacement
