Stages of Team Formation

• Forming
• Storming
• Norming
• Performing
• Termination
Stage 1 : Forming

Feelings
• Team members are usually excited
• Members have high positive expectations
• Some members will have anxiety and doubt whether they will fit into the
team
Behaviour
• Members of the team have lots of questions
• This reflects their excitement and anxiety about their place on the team
Team Tasks
• Creating a team with clear structure, goals and direction to build trust
• Good orientation process helps to ground team members in terms of
mission and goals
• Primary focus is on defining the team
• Task accomplishment is relatively low
Stage 2 : Storming

Feelings
• Team members can’t live up to their early excitement and expectations
• Frustration or anger with team’s progress occurs
• Members express concerns about their inability to meet their goals
• Members expect a response from the team to handle conflicts and
differences
Behaviour
• People maybe less polite than forming stage
• Disagreements about roles and responsibilities are openly expressed
• Frustration maybe directed towards other members and team leader
• Argument about team’s mission or goals occurs
Team Tasks
• Team needs to refocus on its goals
• Larger tasks needs to be broken down into smaller steps
• Task related skills has to be developed
• Redefinition of goals and roles helps to avoid conflicts
Stage 3 : Norming

Feelings
• Discrepancy gets resolved
• Increased sense of comfort in expressing ideas will be experienced
• Feeling of increase in acceptance and group cohesion will occur
• Constructive criticism will be welcomed
Behaviour
• Conscious efforts will be taken to resolve problems
• Frequent and meaningful communication leads to increasing willingness
to share ideas and help other team members
• Refocus on practices and tasks will take place
Team Tasks
• Focus on team’s goals leads to increase in productivity
• Evaluation of team process and productivity will take place
Stage 4 : Performing

Feelings
• Satisfaction in team’s progress
• Awareness of Strenghts and Weakness
• Members feel attached to the team
• Confidence in individual and group abilities
Behaviour
• Team members will be able to prevent problems
• Positive attitude will be visible
• Roles on the team become flexible
• Differences among members are used to enhance team’s performance
Team Tasks
• Team makes significant progress towards goals
• Commitment to team’s mission is high
• Members should deepen their knowledge and skills
• Accomplishments in progress are measured and celebrated
Stage 5 : Termination

Feelings
• Feeling of anxiety due to uncertainty about future responsibilities
• Sadness and sense of loss
• Deep Satisfaction on accomplishments of the team
• Individual and team morale will rise or fall
Behaviour
• If productivity drops some team members may become less focussed on
their tasks
• If productivity increases team members become more focussed on their
future tasks
Team Tasks
• Completion of deliverables and closure of work
• Evaluation of team’s process and product
• Creating a closing celebration to acknowledge the contributions of team
members
