THE MEANING OF LESSON 1

COMMUNICATION
“To effectively communicate, we must
realize that we are all different in the
way we perceive the world and use this
understanding as a guide to our
communication.”

Anthony Robbins quotes (American

advisor to leaders)
WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

1. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
Communication is a process by which
information is exchanged between individuals
through a common system of symbols, signs or
behavior.
2. (Open Encyclopedia) Communication is the
process of exchanging information usually via a
common system of symbols.
WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?
3. (GLENCOE Speech by McCutcheon,
Schaffer, and Wyckoff) Communication is
the process of sending and receiving
messages, and it occurs whenever we express
ourselves in a manner that is clearly
understood.
The word “Symbols” appeared in both
definitions from Merriam-Webster’s Online
Dictionary and Open Encyclopedia.
SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF
COMMUNICATION
Communication is Constant
Wherever we go, whatever we do we always
communicate.
Communication is Interactive
In order for communication to take place, it is basic to
have a sender and a receiver.
Communication is Irreversible
Once communication has taken place, it is difficult for
us to repeat the transaction in exactly the same manner it
was experienced.
SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF
COMMUNICATION
Communication is Complex
Communication is not as simple as we think it
is. It is definitely far more than just talking and
hearing.
Communication is Learnable
We can communicate if we want to.
MODEL OF
COMMUNICATION
1. According to Hamilton Gregory
2. According to Stephen Lucas
3. According to McCutcheon, Schaffer and
Wycoff.

2. Interpersonal – communication to other person

COMMUNICATION FAILS
WHEN THE…
In what instances will the sender, message,
channel, or receiver become the very cause of
communication failure?
Areas Barriers
Sender is unprepared…
Message is disorganized…
Channel is full of distraction…
Receiver is inattentive…
When do we say that communication is
successful or effective? Does it follow that if the
listener understands the message, successful or
effective communication has taken place?
Communication is a transaction between two or
more people, with all the participants having an
active role in the process. A speaker sends a
message and must make it sure that the message is
delivered clearly. A listener takes the delivery of
the message and must be an active listener.
Effective communication only takes place when
the listener clearly understands the message
that the speaker intended to send.
