Industrial safety system
An industrial safety system is a countermeasure crucial in any hazardous
plants such as oil and gas plant sand nuclear plants. They are used to protect
human, plant, and environment in case the process goes beyond the control
margins. As the name suggests, these systems are not intended for controlling
the process itself but rather protection. Process control is performed by means
of process control systems (PCS) and is interlocked by the safety systems so
that immediate actions are taken should the process control systems fail.
Process control and safety systems are usually merged less than one system,
called Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS). Industrial safety systems
typically use dedicated systems that are SIL 2 certified at minimum; whereas
control systems can start with SIL 1. SIL applies to both hardware and
software requirements such as cards, processors redundancy and voting
functions
About Industrial Safety Systems
Mean:

Industrial safety systems are introduced to protect the

human who work in hazardous plants. The industrial
safety systems not only protect the humans, also protect
the environment and the plant from the chemical
reactions.
These systems don’t control any process, but it actually come
into effect when a process can’t be controlled by ordinary
means. As a protective measure, they are rather mounted and
are rapidly becoming the necessity of every working setting.
Types of Industrial Safety Systems:
There are different types of safety systems
in place and their use depends on the type
of industry they are used in. Its:

•Process Control Systems (PCS)

•Safety Shut‐down Systems (SSS)

•Emergency Shutdown- ESD

•Fire and Gas Systems (FGS)

Process Control Systems (PCS)
They are mounted for production environment
surveillance and electronically regulate the
production process. To detect liquid or gas
present in the setting, a laser diode is used. If the
gas or liquid is identified, their specific frequency
signature will be transformed to a digital signal
and the processor will identify the received signal.
Safety Shut‐down Systems (SSS):
In the state of emergency, these systems are
especially helpful as they automatically shut down
a system to a safe state whenever they feel a risk.
To obtain a safe working atmosphere, they can be
linked to the fir and gas systems.
Emergency Shutdown- ESD:
The emergency shutdown is an emergency
shutdown due to failure of the production utility or
failure of significant plant parts. Emergency
shutdown (ESD) minimizes the impact of emergency
circumstances.
The ESD system aims at safeguarding employees,
safeguarding machinery and preventing
environmental impacts from process activities. The
ESD system is considered one of the most significant
safety mechanisms that can be provided by any
plant.
Emergency Shutdown (ESD) System are
specialized highly reliable control systems for
high risk industries like Oil and Gas, Nuclear
Power or other Environments with explosion
risk (Ex.).
Purposes of the ESD System:

.Protection of personnel

.Protection of the environment

.Minimize loss of production and damage to

plant assets
Fire and Gas Systems (FGS):
Highly sensitive and smart are these systems. At an
early stage, they feel the flammable gas, material, or
fluid spill. In the work setting, they also detect the fire
and offer audible and visual signals of the detected
danger. These devices can be automatically or
manually activated.
There are other systems like Pressure Safety Valves
(PSV) and Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESS) that
are widely used in the manufacturing industry.
