Survey on latest network control device(Modem)

 Network devices are the devices that are necessary to build a network and to

keep communication flowing. Network devices include hubs, routers,
switches, repeaters, and wireless access points.
 These devices must be configured, and include firmware which must be updated. There
are different types of network devices used in a computer network which include the
following Network Hub. 
 Network Switch. Modem. Network Router. A cable modem uses coaxial cables that
connect to the back of the modem and the bolt-like outlet in your wall or on your cable
box.
What is Modem

 Modem is short for "Modulator-Demodulator." It is a hardware component that

allows a computer or another device, such as a router or switch, to connect to
the Internet.
 Modem is a device that enables a computer to send or receive data over
telephone or cable lines. The data stored on the computer is digital whereas a
telephone line or cable wire can transmit only analog data.
 It converts or "modulates" an analog signal from a telephone or cable wire to
digital data (1s and 0s) that a computer can recognize. The main function of
the modem is to convert digital signal into analog and vice versa.
There are three types of modems:

 cable
 digital subscriber line (DSL)
 dial-up
CABLE MODEM
 
• A cable modem is a hardware device that allows your computer to
communicate with an Internet service provider over a landline
connection. ... A cable modem works by connecting a
coaxial cable and then a Cat 5 (Ethernet) cord from the modem to a
computer or network router.
 
DSL MODEM
 
• A DSL modem is a kind of modem that lets users connect to the
Internet using a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection. ... Like
dial-up modems, DSL modems connect to the Internet through your
home's telephone line.

DIAL-UP MODEM
 
• Dial-up Internet access is a form of Internet access that uses the
facilities of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to
establish a connection to an Internet service provider (ISP) by
dialing a telephone number on a conventional telephone line.
Difference between modem and other networking
devices(router, switch)

 Device What it does

 Modem: Stands for "modulating-demodulating":

modems are hardware devices that allow a computer or another device, such as a

router or switch, to connect to the Internet. They convert or "modulate" an
analog signal from a telephone or cable wire to digital data (1s and 0s) that a
computer can recognize.
Simply send traffic from point A to point B without further manipulation.

 Routers: Are responsible for sending data from one network to another.

Work at Layer 3 (Network) of the OSI model, which deals with IP addresses.

Typically, routers today will perform the functionality of both a router and a
switch - that is, the router will have multiple ethernet ports that devices can plug
into.

 Switches They use the MAC address of a device to send data only to the port the
: destination device is plugged into.

Work at Layer 2 (Data Link) of the OSI model, which deals with MAC addresses.
