REPORT
Report
1.0 Rationale
The structured cabling for data and voice system helps to ease the way of communication. It
ensures that everything you need for communication ,whether it be video or voice,is easily
accessible and efficient.
Structured cabling standards are important as it helps organizations install wiring in a way
that prevents these messy tangles by keeping the whole wiring infrastructure organized.

4.0 Literature Review

o Introduction:
Structured cabling is the design and installation of a cabling system that will support multiple
hardware uses and be suitable for today's needs and those of the future. With a correctly
installed system, current and future requirements can be met, and hardware that is added in
the future will be supported. Structured cabling design and installation is governed by a set of
standards that specify wiring data centres, offices, and apartment buildings for data or voice
communications using various kinds of cable, most commonly category 5e (Cat 5e), category
6 (Cat 6), and fibre optic cabling and modular connectors. These standards define how to lay
the cabling in various topologies in order to meet the needs of the customer.

3
o Categories
CAT 5:
The Cat 5 Cable, or what is also known as a category 5 cable, is a pair of cables that are
twisted, which are capable of carrying signals. They are most commonly used as structure
cables; these cat 5 cables are for Ethernet capabilities for computer networks. The Cat5 is a
5th generation of Ethernet technology and is a very common cable used today.

Characteristics
Cat 5 cables are mostly unshielded. This results in the cable relying on different signals and
the twisted design of the cable for no is rejection.
Cat 5 cables are capable of carrying two telephone lines, and can also be used in multi-line
phone connections.
The maximum cable length for a Cat5 is 100 m per TIA/EIA 568-5-A.

Life Span Expectancy- a typical Cat5e cable can last you anywhere from 15 to 20 years.

o CAT 5E Cable
When it comes to the Cat5E cable, it is known as the improved structure to that of a standard
Category 5. The crosswalk and crosstalk specifications for a Cat5E cable are tightened, with
some new specifications being introduced, as well. However, the bandwidth of both the Cat 5
and Cat5E cables remain unchanged. 100MHz is the standard performance for both cables.
The cables are both suitable for fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet.
Normally, Cat5 cables have four pairs of copper wire. Fast Ethernet will only make use of
two of this pairs. However, the newly enhanced Cat5e cables, make use of all four pairs
which makes it capable of supporting Gigabit Ethernet. Cat5e cables are also backwards
compatible with its previous Cat5 model.
In a nutshell, Cat5E cables are much better at keeping signals on different circuits so that
they’re not interfering with each other. It can also handle speeds as high as 1000 mbps, a
result of its 100 MHz performance.

o CAT 6
A Category 6 cable (Cat 6 cable) is a type of twisted pair cable standard used specifically in
gigabit (Gb) Ethernet-based computer networks. In 2002, it was jointly defined and specified
by the Electronics Industries Association and Telecommunication Industries Association
(EIA/TIA).

The Cat 6 cable is fully backward compatible with previous versions, such as the Category
5/5e and Category 3 cabling standards.

4
A Cat 6 cable is used mainly for computer networks reaching a Gb, 1000 Mbps or one Gbps
of data transfer speed (DTR) or higher. Characteristics are as follows:

 Consists of four pairs of copper wires, which are all utilized for data transfer
 Provides bandwidth of 250 MHz, speed up to 10 Gbps and may be stretched to 100
meters in length
 Provides more enhanced crosstalk and attenuation protection than its previous twisted
pair cable versions.

o CAT 6A

Cat6a supports bandwidth frequencies of up to 500 MHz, twice the amount of Cat6 cable,
and can also support 10Gbps like its predecessor. However, unlike Cat6 cabling, Cat6a can
support 10 Gigabit Ethernet at 100 meters.

Cat6a also features more robust sheathing which eliminates alien crosstalk (AXT) and
improves upon the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). “A” = augmented. The stronger sheathing
makes Cat6a cabling considerably thicker than Cat6, also making it less flexible to work
with, and therefore, better suited for industrial environments at a lower price point.

Even though Cat6 and Cat6a cabling offer higher performance rates, many LANs still opt for
CAT5e due to its cost-effectiveness and ability to support Gigabit speeds.

o CAT 7

Cat7 can also support 10 Gbps, but laboratory testing has successfully shown its ability to
transmit up to 40 Gb at 50 meters and even 100 Gb at 15 meters. The newer “Class F”
cabling can support frequencies of up to 600 Mhz. That said, Cat7 has not been approved as a
cable standard for telecommunications.

5
Cat7 offers extensive shielding to reduce signal attenuation and is relatively stiff in
comparison to previous generations of cabling. Both individual pairs are shielded, with an
additional layer of shielding over the entire cable. The shielding needs to be grounded and
Cat7 also requires special GigaGate45 (GG45) connectors to take full advantage of higher
performance features.

All in all, Cat6a can perform just about the same as Cat7 but at a lower price point. Most of
our AV and IP surveillance customers opt for Cat6a STP or Cat6a FTP. Both offer shielding
from alien crosstalk and interference around high voltage lines.

Cat7 is suited for use in data centres and large enterprise networks.
