Effect Of Human Activity On

Climate

 What is Climate :
Climate in a narrow sense is usually
defined as the “average”, or more
rigorously , as the statistical
description in terms of mean and
variability of relevant quantities over
a period ranging from months to
thousands or millions of years. The
classical period is 30 years, as
defined by the World meteorological
Organization (WMO). These
quantities are most often surface
variables such as temperature,
precipitation, and wind.
Global Climate Change

What is it?
 Identifiable change in the climate
of Earth as a whole lasts for an
extended period of time (decades or
longer)
 - When due to natural processes , it is
usually referred as global climate
variability
 - Usually refers to changes forced by
human activities that change the
atmosphere
Climate Changes Currently
Happening
What causes Earth’s climate to change?

 Changes in the atmosphere

 Natural processes :
 Volcanoes
 Tectonic plate movement
 Changes in the sun
 Shifts in Earth’s orbit
 Human activities – any activity
that releases “greenhouse
gases” into the atmosphere
What does this graph mean?
IPCC Conclusion:
“Their effects [those of human-
caused greenhouse gases],
together with those of other
anthropogenic drivers, have been
detected throughout the climate
system and are extremely likely to
have been the dominant cause of
the observed warming since the
mid-20th century.”
Effects of Climate Change
 Effects on Ecosystems :
- Coral systems and other unique
ecosystems cannot handle higher
temperatures
- Wildfires will increase
- Up to 30% of species will be at
increased risk for extinction due to
the rapid changes in their ecosystems

Possible Future Effects

 Effects on Oceans :
Because of global warming due to climate change
permafrost and ice are melting massively at the
poles, increasing the sea level at a rate never
known before. The increases reaches 18
cm(including 6 cm in the last 20 years). The worst
case scenario is rise of up to 1 m by 2100.

Possible Future Effects

 Effects on humans:
Human being are not spared by these upheavals.
Climate change is affecting the global economy. It
is already shaking up social, health and
geopolitical balances in many parts of the world.
Rising of sea levels & floods are causing
population migration. The estimated number of
climate refugees by 2050 in 250 million people.

Possible Future Effects

 Effects on Weather :
For decades now meteorologists and
climatologists around the world have been
watching the effects of global warming on the
weather phenomena. And the impact is huge :
more droughts and heatwaves, more
precipitations, more natural disasters like floods,
hurricanes, storms and wildfires, frost tree
season, etc.

Possible Future Effects

Climate Change Prevention
 Renewable Energies
 Energy and water Efficiency
 Sustainable Transportation
 Sustainable Infrastructure
 Sustainable Agriculture &
Forest Management
 Responsible Consumption &
Recycling
