ENERGY CRISIS IN

INDIA
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

• Some states have complained about an impending power shortage and written to the central government
raising the issue of shortage of coal. Some states have also reported power cuts due to supply shortage.
• Reuters reported that more than 50 per cent of 135 coal-fired power plants had stocks of less than three
days. These 135 coal-powered electricity generation plants account for 70 per cent of power supply in
India.
• PTI also cited data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) to report that 16 coal power plants had
stocks for zero days as on October 7. These power plants have a cumulative capacity of 16,880 MW.
• This summed up that India was on the brink of a nationwide electricity crisis.
REASONS FOR THE CRISIS

• unprecedented increase in demand for electricity due to the revival of the economy
• heavy rains in coal mine areas during September 2021 thereby adversely affecting the
coal production as well as dispatch of coal from mines
• increase in prices of imported coal to unprecedented high level leading to a substantial
reduction in power generation from imported coal-based power plants leading to more
dependence on domestic coal
• non-building of adequate coal stocks before the onset of monsoon
WAYS TO OVERCOME THE CRISIS

• First of all a single independent body should be commissioned to look after the problems related to
electricity like energy security, rural electrification, etc. The body should be kept accountable.
• There should be decommissioning of all regulatory boards and a single board should be
commissioned. Issues like the Tariff regulation subsidies for rural areas etc. can be handled much
more efficiently and smoothly if there is one body.
• There should be transparency in the system, this can be achieved by online bill collection system.
• There should be policies regarding corrupt employees of utility system. The defaulters must not go
unpunished.
