Summarize the Literal Meaning

The most important part of

love is learning when to let
go.
State the Literal Meaning

 The literal meaning is that

Robert loved Edna, but he
couldn’t cope with the
frustration of knowing that
she will never be his.
State the Figurative , or
deeper , meaning
The Relationship to the Character
 Robert and Edna can never be in a relationship
because they will always have to sneak
around. Even if Mr. Pontellier happened to die
they wouldn't be allowed to be together
because it is not right for a widowed woman to
get married again. She's supposed to mourn
her husbands death until she dies. Edna and
Robert will never truly be one and it will hurt
him to not be able to have her as his own
because according to society's standards, she
will always belong to someone else- Leonce.
The Relationship to the Text
 No matter how much love you develop for someone, while
married, it will never be accepted in that society. When
Edna, being a married woman, started to become closer to
Alcee and began to develop strong feelings for him, Adele
did not approve of it. Also when Robert and Edna started
to talk a woman named Madame Ratignolle also didn’t
approve ,she even asked Robert to leave Edna alone. In an
interesting way, it foreshadowed why Robert left. He
knew that there was no way that Edna would ever be able
to be his, even though their love was strong. The more
time that he spent with her, the more he fell in love with
her and dug himself deeper into the hole. He had to be
able to let her go because she wasn't his to begin with.
The Relationship to Society
 This quote relates to society because it shows
through Robert’s eyes that him and Edna
cannot be together. Edna is a married women
who is “property” of her husband Mr. Leonce
Pontellier. Although , at the moment Edna
wasn’t with her husband , it was like a silent
agreement between the men. Robert knew that
Edna wasn’t his to take, so he could no longer
continue their affair.
The relationship to the author
 The quote strongly relates to the author because we feel as if Kate
Chopin was becoming tired of her community and how women were
being treated. The letter that Robert left for Edna saying, 'I love you.
Good-by--because I love you' represented Edna's breaking point. We
think Kate Chopin added this quote to the book because she had reached
her breaking point, dealing with all of the rules that society had set upon
her, as a woman. Maybe she wanted to get out of her marriage because
she was too busy living up to the standard that society expected from
her. Or maybe she was growing tired of being considered her husband's
'property'. Whatever the case was, Edna Pontellier's character
represented Kate Chopin. They were both trying so hard to get away
from the rules of society, that they both created havoc in their own lives.
In Edna's case, it was by having relations with two men, even though
she was married, which resulted in her suicide. In Chopin's case, it was
writing this book, in which she was ridiculed and looked at as an outcast
by the people in her society. However different their cases were, they
had both reached their breaking points and were ready to say goodbye.
