The history of

Jamestown

 On May 14, 1607, that is, 409 years ago, three English
ships - the Susan Constant, Godspit and Discovery -
ran into the coast of the American continent.
 The first 104 migrants descended to the land, among
whom there were both true gentlemen and ordinary
poor people. The ships sailed back to England for
food: a little more than a hundred people were left
alone surrounded by an unfamiliar civilization.
London and Plymouth
companies

The British twice tried to strengthen
themselves on the American coast.
The first colonists who reached
America in 1584 was Francis Drake.

The fate of the second batch of

colonists turned out to be even
more tragic: the sailors who sailed
with provisions in 1588 found all
the buildings of the colonists intact,
but they could not find a single
settler.
At the beginning of the XVII century, King James I
decided not to take responsibility for the following
expeditions, which could be unsuccessful, and assigned
the duty of conquering the North American continent to
two private companies — London and Plymouth.
These companies were
supposed to be engaged in the
spread of Christianity.
On December 9, 1606, the
ships of the London Company
under the command of the
hired captain Christopher
Newport left London and
headed for the Virginia.
The first city in honor of the
king

The British landed on the
territory of the unknown
continent on May 14,
1607. The colonists have
already suffered the first
losses: during the long
voyage, several dozen
people died of hunger
and various diseases.
Jamestown, the first English fort in America, was located
in a swampy area where people were very much bothered
by mosquitoes. Young people were most interested in the
opportunity to find gold, and they were much less
interested in the construction of grain crops.

The real savior

for them was
Captain
Newport, who
supplied food
from England.

In the early years of Fort Jamestown almost every

second settler died more people arrived from the British
Isles. Colonists also often suffered from dysentery,
malaria and pneumonia. However, despite all these
difficulties, Jamestown became the first English
settlement that marked the beginning of the
colonization of North America.
The story from the cartoon
A fairly democratic form of

government emerged in
Jamestown. One of these seven
men left early in 1607 to
explore and did not return to
Jamestown. Smith was
captured by Indians. The
Indian chief decided that the
stranger should be killed with a
blow to the head with a club,
but the Englishman was saved
by the chief's daughter, young
Pocahontas.
Later, John Smith will write a book about his
adventures.. John Smith after this story became the
sole leader of Fort Jamestown. It was John Smith,
who, having visited the Russian kingdom, taught
the English colonists to build houses on the model
of Russian log huts.
Hungry time

 1609-1610, during which the population of the fort
decreased almost 10 times — from 500 people to 60.
However, in 1612, one of the settlers, farmer John Rolfe,
crossed different varieties of tobacco.
It turned out that it not only grows well on the lands of
Virginia, but also meets the tastes of the most
sophisticated English gentlemen in smoking.
Tobacco became the backbone of Jamestown's economy
for many years.
 To grow tobacco, the colonists needed more and
more land, so they gradually cut down forests and
drove the Indians out of there.
 Soon another round of wars between settlers and
Indians began. On March 22, 1622, the Indians
attacked the colonists' settlement, slaughtering about
400 people.

In the massacre of
1622, about a
third of the
population of
Jamestown died.
