SANSKAR KENDRA - CITY MUSEUM

History:
The Museum of Ahmedabad in India was commissioned the architect Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris (Le Corbusier), in 1951. After a
debate that had the City Council in July of that year, the museum project became the main objective to make the “heart” to the civic center. Le
Corbusier simultaneously conducted various projects for Ahmedabad as the Palace of the Spinners’ Association the same year, the Villa Shodhan
and the House of Manorama Sarabhai. The generative idea was the Cultural Center of a Museum “Unlimited” (Musée à croissance illimitée),
formerly Le Corbusier would have projected the idea that over the years suffer changes and even add new concepts or elements.
Sanskar Kendra is a museum at Ahmedabad, India, designed by the architect LeCorbusier. It is a city museum depicting history, art, culture and
architecture of Ahmedabad. The design stems from the idea that he had previously explored of a “museum of unlimited extension”, making use of
standardized structural elements to create a core building that could be extended over time as additional funds were procured.

Sanskar Kendra is an Indian cultural center in Ahmedabad, in the state of Gujarat, which houses two museums, famous for its building designed by
the celebrated architect Le Corbusier. The building takes its name from Sanskar Kendra, the first major of Ahmedabad. Despite the construction
being in rather bad conditions and needing major maintenance works and updates, the museum is still worth a visit because of its historical
importance. Completed in 1956, the home of the museums was designed in the early ’50s by Swiss-French architect Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-
Gris, best known as Le Corbusier, as part of a larger development which also included the local Mill Owners’ Association headquarters and two
private houses, Villa Sarabhai and Villa Shodhan. Roughly in the same period, Le Corbusier was designing the urban development of the city of
Chandigarh, Punjab.

The Museum at the Cultural Centre at Ahmedabad, known as Sanskar Kendra, is located in the state of Gujarat in Ahmedabad. It is located near the
Sardar Bridge around 400 meters from the western bank of the River Sabarmati, which flows through the city. 2.9 km from bus station ,12.7 km
from air port and 4.8 km from railway station. The initial square core of the museum around a courtyard was constructed by 1954. The intention for
the site was to develop three additional, individual volumes around the core museum each with its own circulation and a raised walkway
connection to the core building. One was to contain an open-air theatre, studio and conference facilities, 'while the other two would contain
archaeological and anthropological rooms, There -was also a potential to extend the core building itself and construct a "magic box" theatre at the
eastern end of the site. However, none of these extensions -were ever realized.

Design Concept & Approach:

1.The Pilotis: A grid of concrete or steel columns replaces the loadbearing walls and becomes the basis of the new aesthetics. The decisive factor is
the idea of supporting structures on pillars in order to make the soil freely usable.

2.The roof garden: Both as a kitchen garden and as a sun terrace. On a flat roof a humus layer is covered with vegetation, this ensures constant
moisture and serves as a perfect heat and cold insulator.

3.The free ground plan: The absence of loadbearing walls allows flexible use of the living space, which can be divided by screen elements.

4.The horizontal windows: he horizontal windows cut through the non-load bearing walls along the facade and provide the apartment with even
light. It gives the interior a lightness & offers views of the surroundings.

5.The free façade: Open and closed sections on the façade enable the separation and connection of the exterior design from the building structure.
