City Of Tikal
1. Tikal is the second largest of the ancient
ruined cities of the Mayan World civilization.

2. Tikal is located in the rain forest of the central


peninsula of Guatemala.

3. The city has been completely mapped and


covered an area greater than 16 square
kilometres (6.2 sq mi) that included about
3000 structures

4. The architecture of the ancient city is built


from limestone and includes
1. Temples over 70 metres (230 ft) high,
2. Large royal palaces,
3. A number of smaller pyramids,
4. Residences,
5. Administrative buildings,
6. Platforms
7. Inscribed stone monuments.
1. The limestone used for construction was local
and quarried on-site.

2. The depressions formed by the extraction of


stone for building were plastered to
waterproof them and were used as reservoirs,
together with some waterproofed natural
depressions.

1. The Great Plaza lies at the core of the site.
2. It is flanked on the east and west sides by two great temple-pyramids, on
the north side by the North Acropolis and on the south by the Central
Acropolis.
3.  It developed into a funerary complex for the ruling dynasty.
4. Row of tall pyramids was added to the earlier Northern Platform, which
measured 100 by 80 metres (330 by 260 ft).

1. Temple I (Temple of the Great Jaguar) is a funerary pyramid
2. The pyramid was completed around 740–750.
3. The temple rises 47 metres (154 ft) high. 
4. The massive roof comb that topped the temple was originally decorated
with a giant sculpture of the enthroned king.
1. Temple II (the Temple of the Mask) in was built around AD 700 and stands
38 metres (125 ft) high.
2. The summit shrine had three consecutive chambers with the doorways
spanned by wooden lintels, only the middle of which was carved.

Central Acropolis is the palace complex.

1. In the Lost World Complex at Tikal, for example, there is a pyramid which faces three
other temples.
2. If you're standing on the pyramid, the other temples are aligned with the rising sun on
equinoxes and solstices.
