Maintenance
Hydropower systems are capital intensive assets that
can produce a significant income for many decades
provided they are operated efficiently and maintained
to a high standard. Conversely a hydropower system
that is operated sub-optimally can suffer a significant
reduction in energy production, and therefore income,
even though the operating costs remain constant.
Renewables First’s operational Support and
Maintenance Services cover three main areas of work:
Hydropower system routine and non-routine service
contracts
Hydropower system review and operational
optimization
Hydropower system upgrades and improvements
Routine Hydropower Operation & Maintenance Contracts
Renewables First’s hydropower service contracts provide regular preventative maintenance and inspections to
ensure reliable day-to-day operation of your plant. The frequency of visits varies depending on the size, type and
complexity of the system, but as a guide would generally be:

Size of system No. visits per year

50 kW 1
100 W 2
250 kW 3
500 kW 4
1 MW 6
Larger systems Please get in touch to discuss
your requirements.
Our routine services normally take one day
for two hydropower service technicians to
complete and covers:
Turbine functional checks and inspection.
Turbine bearing lubrication and inspection.
Gearbox inspection.
Gearbox oil condition analysis and oil changes.
Gearbox bearing inspection and lubrication.
Drive belt inspection and replacement.
Drive coupling inspection.
Generator inspection.
Generator bearing inspection and lubrication.
Hydraulic system inspection.
Hydraulic system oil condition analysis and oil changes.
Check all sensors operate correctly.
Check controller functions correctly.
Inspection of intake area, impounding structures, pipeline, sluice(s).
Hydropower Non-routine Maintenance
Routine maintenance visits often identify faults that require non-stock spare parts or by their nature are
too large a task to undertake during the routine visit, or some clients have specific major maintenance
tasks they need to be done. Such work can include:

Bearing replacement.
Changing drive couplings and belts, including realignment.
Sensor replacement and calibration.
Controller optimization / reprogramming.
Internal (endoscopic) inspections of turbines and gearboxes.
Major mechanical / electrical or civil engineering repairs and refurbishments.
Pipeline pigging.
Pipeline external and internal inspections.
Weir condition surveys.
Flow rate measurements (to verify turbine performance and consent compliance).
Hydraulic accumulator testing and recharging.
Electrical inspection and testing.
Automated intake screening system maintenance.
Fish pass / bypass / eel pass works.
Hydro system performance and operational reviews / optimisation.
Environmental permit compliance.
How to order?
 Routine and non-routine hydropower maintenance servicing can be ordered at
any time by informing us of your requirements, then we will respond with a
completed proposal document which will need signing, scanning and emailing
(or posting) back to us. For new clients we invoice 50% of the fixed-fee part in
advance and this will require payment before the site visit. Existing clients are
invoiced on completion with 28-day payment terms (note significant non-
routine work will require staged payments).
 The Service Contract is ordered and administered using an NEC3 Term Service
Short Contract which we can prepare for all parties to sign.
