Understanding 5S Methodology Explained

5S is a methodology for organizing, cleaning, developing, and sustaining a productive work environment. It consists of five Japanese words that begin with "S": Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in Order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardize), and Shitsuke (Sustain). The steps involve tidying up a workspace, properly storing and labeling items, cleaning the workspace daily, standardizing processes, and making continuous improvements part of the culture. Implementing 5S leads to benefits like increased efficiency, improved safety and quality of work, and a more positive work environment. Some add a sixth "S" for safety to explicitly focus on improving workplace hazards.

What is Five S?
A Five S program is usually a part of, and the
key component of establishing a Visual
Workplace and a part of KAIZEN.

5S is a methodology for organizing, cleaning,

developing, and sustaining a productive work
environment.

The principles underlying a Five S program

at first appear to be simple and they are. But
until the advent of Five S programs many
businesses ignored these basic principles.

What are the Five S's?

•Seiri - the first step in making things

cleaned up and organized.
•Seiton- organize, identify and arrange
everything in a work area.
•Seiso - regular cleaning and maintenance .
•Seiketsu - make it easy to maintain -
simplify and standardize .
•Shitsuke-maintaining what has been

or demarcated.

 Items should be arranged in a manner that

promotes efficient work flow.

 Each tool, part, supply, piece of equipment, etc.

should be kept close to where it will be used. 10
11

frustration

12
SHINE (Seiso)
The workplace should be kept tidy.

 At the end of each shift, clean the work area

and be sure everything is restored to its place.

 A key point is that maintaining cleanliness

should be part of the daily work - not an
occasional activity initiated when things get too
messy.

13

• Improved self-esteem

• Greater efficiency in achieving goals

• Greater readiness for new tasks

• Fewer hazards 19
Sixth phase of 5S
 A sixth phase, "Safety", is sometimes
added in five S.

 It is reasonable to assume that a properly

planned and executed 5S program will
inherently improve workplace safety.

 But some argue that explicitly including

this sixth S ensures that workplace safety is
given consideration.

20
To conclude ….
It is important to have continuous education
about maintaining standards.

When there are changes that affect the 5S

program such as new equipment, new products
or new work rules, it is essential to make
changes in the standards and provide training.

Companies embracing 5S often use posters

and signs as a way of educating employees and
maintaining standards.
