Introduction to website design

• Introduction of web design: 1989 A.D., by creator Tim Berners Lee

• refers to the design of websites that are displayed on the internet.

• Process of collecting ideas, arranging and implementing them, guided by

certain principles for a specific purpose.

• Different areas: web graphic design, user interface design, user

experience design, search engine etc.

• Works on the appearance, layout, and in some cases content of a website.

Elements of web design

Layout : It is the way the graphics, ads and text

are arranged.

Color: Choice of colors depends on the purpose

and clients.

GRAPHICS: Can include logos, photos, clipart or

icons, all of which enhance the web design.

Fonts : Various fonts can enhance a web design.

Visual Hierarchy theory

• Visual hierarchy is the principle of arranging elements to show their

order of importance. Designers structure visual characteristics-e.g.,
menu icons, so users can understand information easily.

• “Visual hierarchy controls the delivery of the experience. If you

have a hard time figuring out where to look on a page, it’s more
likely that its layout is missing a clear visual hierarchy.” (Donald A.
Norman, 2002)

How to craft a strong Visual Hierarchy

A strong visual hierarchy leads users to

page/screen’s functionality and gives them the
right visual cues. From the perspective of users:

• When encouraging an interface, users react

extremely fast

• Users eye follow predictable reading paths,

which are culturally influenced. So they design

• Users prefer recognition over recall

Considering the user preference, designers/owner can show
users the most important things as they try to achieve goals in
their individual context. Some of the points are:
