FORESTS AND AGRICULTURE

Forests

 Forests play an important role in the economy of a country. Apart from


providing timber, firewood, fodder, wild life, fruits, seeds resins and
recreation
 the forests regulate water supply and furnish aesthetic values. The
government has set a target of 20 % of the lent areas to be brought under
vegetation.
 The forests area in the country has been reduced to make room for
cultivation and animals. At the time of partition about 50 lakh acres was
covered with natural or artificial forests. It was about 4 % of the total area,
which was insufficient for country’ s need.

 At present only 4.5 % of the total area is under forests while it should be at
least 20 % to put the economy on stable foundations.
 The forests in our country can be divided into the following two kinds.
 Natural forests
 Artificial forests
Natural forests

 Natural forests are those areas which have grown and developed into forest
by natural process of vegetation.
 Forests of Northern area
 Shrub forests of the foot-hills and plains
 The Baluchistan Hill forests
 Tidal forests
 The Rive rain or Bela Forests
Artificial forests

 comprised of those area which has been converted into wooded area by
purely artificial means of plantation and vegetation.
 Quite a few artificial forests are found in Punjab and Sindh where a few
irrigated plantation units have been established.
Agriculture

 Agricultural sector is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy.


 Pakistan’s 80% pf population is associated with the agriculture for their
livelihood.

 Water-logging and Salinity
 Lake of irrigation facilities
 Scarcity of funds
 Land Erosions
 Under utilization of cultivable land
 Inadequate system of transportation
 Ignorance of the former

Agriculture crops of Pakistan

 Those crops which are cultivated before the beginning of winter season and
harvested in early summer are known as ‘Rabi crops’ they included
 wheat
 Barley
 Grams
 Oilseeds
 Pulses
KHARIF CROPS

 Those crops which are grown in the beginning of summer and harvested in
early winter are called as ‘Kharif Crops’ these include,
 Rice
 Cotton
 Sugar-cane
 Maize
 Millets (Jawar and Bajra)
 Wheat
 Barley
 Oil-seeds
