NONRENEWABLE RENEWABLE ENERGY

ENERGY SOURCE SOURCES

Resources that are not replaced or

regenerated naturally within a reasonable A resource that can be used
period of time continuously without being used up.
FOSSIL FUELS
THE ACCUMULATED REMAINS OF LIVING
ORGANISMS THAT WERE BURIED
MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO.
THREE MAJOR FORMS OF FOSSIL FUELS

COAL OIL NATURAL GAS

CARBONIFEROUS PERIOD

It was 360- 246 billion years ago,

before the age of the dinosaurs.
FACTS
The largest coal deposit are found in United States, Russia and China.

 Sizable deposits are located in Australia, India and South Africa.

More than half of the worlds known oil and natural gas reserves are located in
the Middle East
MIDDLE EAST WAS NOT ALWAYS A VAST
DESERT
COAL
Solid fossil fuel formed from ferns, trees and plants
remains.
THREE MAIN TYPES OF COAL

• Anthracite
• Bituminous
• Lignite
OIL

Formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived over millions of years
ago in a water setting.
NATURAL GAS

mostly made of gas called methane.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

Geothermal energy can be defined as heat

energy that is stored in the Earth. In fact, the
word geothermal comes from the two Greek
words geo (earth) and thermal (heat).
Geothermal energy is essentially energy in the form of heat below the Earth’s
surface. There are two main contributors to this energy:
• The Earth’s internal heat
• Heat energy from the Sun
Reservoirs can be suspected in
the areas where we find
Geyser
Boiling mud pot
Volcano
Hot spring
DRY STEAM POWER PLANT
HYDROELECTRIC POWER

Flowing water creates energy that can be

captured and turned into electricity. This Is
called hydroelectric power or hydropower.
Advantages of Hydroelectric Power Plant

Once the dam is built, the energy is virtually free.

No waste or pollution produced.
Water can be stored above the dam ready to cope with peaks in demand.
Hydro-electric power stations can increase to full power very quickly, unlike
other power stations.
Electricity can be generated constantly.
DISADVANTAGES OF HYDROELECTRIC POWER
PLANT
The dams are very expensive to build.
Building a large dam will flood a very large area upstream, causing problems
for animals that used to live there.
Finding a suitable site can be difficult - the impact on residents and the
environment may be unacceptable.
Water quality and quantity downstream can be affected, which can have an
impact on plant life.

5It is the softest and is low in carbon but high in hydrogen and oxygen content.
