Spin-spin coupling or Hyperfine Splitting

Spin-spin coupling describes the magnetic interactions
between neighboring, non-equivalent NMR-active nuclei.

Each set of equivalent hydrogens on a given carbon

is split into an n+1 multiplet by adjacent hydrogen atoms that
are nonequivalent to the hydrogens of the given carbon

“a" group of protons signal consisting of a cluster of three peaks (triplet)

“b” group of protons consists of a cluster of four peaks (quartet)

Why have the signals split?

The spin of (-CH3) can couple with the nearby
methylene group in three distinct ways in relation to
the external field.

Triplet signal is given by -CH3

The spin of (-CH2) can couple with the nearby methyl

group in four distinct ways in relation to the external
field.

Quartet signal is given by –CH2
