What is Operating System

• An operating system is a
program that provides an
interface between the users, User
the application and the
computer.
• It acts as a link between user
and the computer(hardware).
App. Software
Ultimately the computer
system works using binary
signals(1s & 0s). These
complexities are hidden by the Operating System
Operating System.

Different Types Of OS

On Basis Of Capacity
• Stand Alone/Single User OS
• Network /Multi User OS

Stand Alone Operating System

• Single User
Operating
System
• Only one user
can access the
system at a
time.
• E.g. DOS,
Windows 3X/9X

Network Operating System
• Multi-User & time-
sharing OS
• Supports multi
processor and
multitasking
• More than one users
can access the
system at a time
with more than one
programs
• E.g. UNIX,Novell,
Windows NT,etc.

UNIX OS
• Released in 1975 by Bell
Laboratory, USA
• Stable and efficient OS having
more security features
• Generally used for mission
critical applications.

Novell OS

• Started at the beginning of

1980s and was quite popular to
work with 16-bit applications in
Networking Environment

Windows NT/2000 Server

• 32-bit network Operating

System
• Fully supports multitasking and
multithreading features
• Supports both 16-bit/32-bit
application
• More integrated with web
technologies

Linux OS
• Developed by a student as his
project work in the Universities
of Finland
• Enhanced later by other
developers with many new
features
• Now-a-days popular as web-
server

Types of Operating System

On basis of Interface

• Character User
Interface (CUI) Print
• Graphical User
Interface (GUI)

CUI vs. GUI OS
• An Operating • An Operating
System that uses System that uses
a set of different kinds of
graphical
characters to
notations,pictures,
communicate etc. to
between the communicate
user and the between the user
computer. and the computer.
– E.g. DOS, UNIX, – E.g. Windows
Novell, etc. 95/98/2000/NT,etc.

Disk Operating System
• Released in 1981 and designed for an
old CPU l888888ke Intel 80x86
• Provides character based User
Interface (CUI)
• Does not support the advanced OS
features like multitasking and
multiprocessing
• Popular till 1995
