INTRODUCTION
 Surface finishing is a broad range of industrial processes
that alter the surface of a manufactured item to achieve
certain property.
 Finishing processes con be employed to improve:-
 Corrosion resistance
 Tarnish resistance
 Chemical resistance
 Wear resistance
 Electrical conductivity
 Remove burrs
 “It is a MODERN process
which makes the product GOOD LOOKING”
Basic criteria for choosing a
Advanced Fine Finishing Process
 Production speed

 Type of material

 Cost effectiveness

 Metal hardness

 Value of surface finish required

Benefits of Advanced Fine
Finishing Processes
 Appearance
 Wettability
 Solder ability
 Corrosion resistance
 Tarnish resistance
 Chemical resistance
 Wear resistance
 Hardness
 Electrical conductivity
 Remove burrs and other surface flaws
 Control the surface friction
Requirement of
Advanced Fine Finishing Process
 Due to advancement in material science

 Demand for nano–material and smart materials

 Limitations of traditional fine finishing processes

Types of
Advanced Fine Finishing Process
1. Magnetic abrasive finishing

2. Magnetic float polishing

3. Spot hydrodynamic polishing

4. Magneto Rhelogical abrasive finishing

5. Elastic emission machining

6. Ion beam machining

Advantages & Disadvantages
 Advantages of superfinishing include: increasing part life,
decreasing wear, closer tolerances, higher load bearing
surfaces, better sealing capabilities, and elimination of a break
in period.

 The Disadvantage is that super finishing requires grinding or a

hard turning operation beforehand, which increases cost.
Superfinishing has a lower cutting efficiency because of smaller
chips and lower material removal rate. Superfinishing stones are
softer and wear more quickly
Applications of
Advanced Fine Finishing Process
 Gears
 Bearing races
 Ball bearing
 Needle bearing
 Shafts
 Lead screw
 Micro chips
 Ratchet
