Introduction
• The need for skilled report writing has increased in the last
20 years.
• Companies increasingly seek training for technical staff,
however, technical writing skills are not only necessary for
engineers and alike; these skills are critical in any
technically-oriented professional job. 
• Technical communications—or technical writing—is not
writing about a specific technical topic such as computers,
but about any technical topic.

Skills
• Public speaking is fundamental to success
in professional and public circles.
• Presentation is the only way to explain to
catch people’s attention so that they are
briefed on what a technical outcome is.
• Therefore, it must be presented in a way
that people will understand the idea the
presenter is trying to sell.
Essay Writing
• Essay writing is increases understanding and helps the
process of learning because it pushes you, amongst other
things, to clarify and sort out ideas and information, to
analyze source material and to exercise critical judgement.
• introduces the topic of the report in context.

Report • explains the problem and/or motivation for the


project.
• states the aim/s of the project.

Writing • indicates the purpose of the report.

Introduction to CV and Resume

A CV—short for the Latin phrase “curriculum vitae” meaning “course of


life”—is a detailed document highlighting your professional and academic
history. 

A resume summary is the resume introduction of choice for anyone who


has several years of experience or those continuing on in their career.
Memo Writing
• Memos are typically used for communication within a
company or organization.
• They can be semi-formal or formal, depending on the
recipient.
• Memos are often used when a large group of people is being
addressed at the same time or when a hard copy (rather than
an email) needs to be transmitted or posted. 
Formal Letter Writing

Letter writing is an essential skill.

Despite the prevalence of emails and text messages, everyone has to


write letters at some point.

Letters of complaint, job applications, thank you letters, letters


requesting changes or making suggestions — the list goes on and on.
