Three Laws

of Motion

Prepared by Sir Daniel Lorio

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• Identify the Newton’s Laws of Motion;
• Participate actively to the activity about force and
motion; and
• Show awareness on how the Newton’s Laws of
Motion function in our daily life through role
playing.
Sir Isaac Newton
-the Father of Modern Physics
-presented the 3 Laws of Motion
ACTIVITY:
PANTOMIME
Riding a bus

Pushing a grocery cart Walking on a street

“A body at rest will remain at
rest and a body in motion will
continue moving with constant
velocity unless acted upon by
an unbalanced force.”
EXAMPLES OF LAW OF INERTIA
-When a passenger is seated on a
stationary bus which suddenly moves forward,
the passenger jerks backward.

-When a passenger is seated on a moving bus

with constant velocity which suddenly stops,
the passenger jerks forward.

-A running athlete will continue to run even

after reaching the finished line, or else he/she will stumble
and fall.
“The acceleration of a body is
directly proportional to the
force
that cause it to move and
inversely proportional to the
mass
of the object being moved.”
LAW OF ACCELERATION
Equation form:
a= F
m F
÷ ÷

F= (m)(a)
M A
𝒙

m= F NOTE:
1Newton (N) = 1kg m
a s2
SAMPLE PROBLEM 1:

Find the acceleration of the shopping push cart, given

its mass of 20,000 grams with a force of 10 N. What
will be its acceleration?
Given: Solution:
m= 20 kg a= F / m
F= 10 N a= 10 N / 20 kg
Find: a= 10 kg m / 20 kg
s2
a=? a= 0.5 m
s2
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2:

A 500-kg car is accelerated at 5m/s2. How much force

was applied to accelerate the car?
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2:

A 500-kg car is accelerated at 5m/s2. How much force

was applied to accelerate the car?
Given: Solution:
m= 500 kg F= (m)(a) F=(500kg)(5m/s 2
)
a= 5m/s 2
F= 2,500 kg m/s2 or
Find: F= 2,500 N
F=?
Newton’s Three Laws of Motion
“For every action,
there is an equal and opposite
reaction.”
EXAMPLES OF LAW OF
ACCELERATION:
Book on table
Action force:
The downward force of the
book (weight).
Reaction force:
The upward force of the
table (normal force).
EXAMPLES OF LAW OF
ACCELERATION:
A ROCKET LAUNCHED
IN SPACE
ACTION FORCE:
THE ROCKET
PUSHING THE GAS
DOWNWARD.
REACTION FORCE:
THE GAS PUSHING
THE ROCKET
UPWARD.
ACTIVITY:
In the same group. 1 representative will choose one of the
Newton’s Laws of Motion.
You will make a creative role-playing presentation based on
the particular law that you have picked.
You will be given 5 minutes to brainstorm and practice.

The rest of the class will guess what is that scenario or

situation and what law of motion was applied.
SHORT QUIZ:
In a ¼ sheet of paper answer the following questions:
Choose from the options below the principle that explains the instances given.
A. Law of Inertia
B. Law of Acceleration
C. Law of Interaction
____1. Rocket Motion.
____2. You feel hurt when you strike the wall.
____3. If a book is dropped, it falls to the floor.
____4. You feel being thrown outside when a car you are
riding in goes around a curve.
____5. Golf player
____6. A nail hit by a hammer.
____7. Take a step forward.
____8. Pushing a cabinet.
____9. Jumping boy.
____10. Rolling ball.
