SQUARE ROOT

OF A THREE
DIGIT PERFECT
SQUARE
NUMBERS
USING SRQT’s
METHOD
Background of the Study
One of the subjects students are

having hard time to cope up with is

Mathematics. Students on the average don’t

perform well in this subject because they

find the problems difficult to solve.

Also, some of them, though they excel in

math, find it hard to accept their mistakes

because of their carelessness in solving

problems. In high school education, where

students are required to have scientific

calculators,
the students may have or does not have a scientific

calculator. This challenge to find alternative ways to

get square root of a number which mathematics

offers, gives the students the ability to be more

logical and analytical in solving mathematical

problems.
Objectives of the Study

This study aims to provide an effective

method in getting the square root of three-

digit numbers without the use of calculating

devices.
Statement of the Problem

Can the algorithm provide an effective

and easy method for students and teachers

in getting the square root of three-digit

numbers?
Significance of the Study

This study can help the students in

enhancing their knowledge about square

roots and their mathematical skills. It will

also help them in solving square roots

without relying on calculating devices.

For students:

It enables them to get the square root of

three digit numbers correctly and accurately

in an agile way even without the use of

calculators.
 It minimizes their dependence on

calculating devices.

 It builds up their knowledge and enhances

their mathematical skills.

 It helps them appreciate Mathematics as a

subject since it can be used to find the

square root of three-digit numbers easy.

Scope and Limitations

This method is delimited only to the

numbers with three-digits. You can only use

this in getting the square root of numbers that

are positive integers and perfect squares.

Definition of terms
 Multiplication – to multiply a number

 Squaring (a number) – to multiply number

by itself
 Square root- factor that we can multiply by
itself to get the number. The symbol for
square root is √.
 Squaring- multiplying a number by itself.

 Parenthesis- a pair of round brackets ( )

used to mark off a parenthetical word or

phrase.

 2 – a superscript used to denote square.

METHODOLOGY

The researchers first applied and

memorized their knowledge about the

squares of 1 to 9 to calculate faster the

SQRT’S method.
To extract the square root of any perfect
square, the researchers followed the steps
presented below:

Step-1: Look at the magnitude of the

“hundreds number” (the numbers preceding
the last two digits) and find the largest square
that is equal to or less than the number. This is
the 1stpart of the answer.
Step-2: Now, look at the last (unit’s) digit of
the number. If the number ends in a:
0 -> then the ending digit of the answer is a
0
1 -> then the ending digit of the answer is 1
or 9.
4 -> then the ending digit of the answer is 2
or 8.
5 -> then the ending digit of the answer is a 5.
6 -> then the ending digit of the answer is 4 or
6.
9 -> then the ending digit of the answer is 3 or
7.

To determine the right answer from 2

possible answers (other than 0 and 5),
mentally multiply the findings in step-1 with its
next higher number.
If the left extremities (the numbers

preceding the last two digits) are greater than

the product, the right digit would be the

greater option (9,8,7,6) and if left extremities

are less than the product, the right digit would

be the smaller option (1,2,3,4).

The researchers would survey the SRQT’s

method to the students of Bislig City

National High School. After the survey, the

data will be classified into a table and we will

use percentage.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The result of the study revealed that:

•This shortcut can also be used in finding the

square-root of four-digit numbers.

•To perform fast calculations mentally, the technique

needs the memorization of the squares of 1 to 9.
