PROMOTION

PROMOTION
Means the advancement of an employee to a higher job involving more work, greater responsibility and higher status.
Edwin B. Flippo: promotion involves a change from one job to another job that is better in term of status and
responsibilities.”
Scolt and spriagal, “promotion is the transfer of an employee to a job that pays more money or enjoys some better
status. “
 
Features of promotion
Promotion is a reward for Features consistently good performance of the employee
It enhance employee morale and job satisfaction
It involves higher responsibilities, better job status and increase in salary.
Provide opportunities for career advancement .
It helps the organization to attract and retain good performers .
Main purpose of promotion.
To recognize and reward the efficiency of an employee.
To attract and retain the services of qualified and competent people .
To increase the effectiveness of the employee and the organization .
To motivate the employee to higher productivity.
To fill up the higher vacancies from within the organization .
To build loyalty , morale and sense of belonging s of the employees .
Types of promotion
Dry promotion
They are those which are given in level of increase in compensation i.e when compensation is adjusted upwards to keep
pace with the cost of living we have dry promotion .it is done without increase in salary or remuneration . For example a
college professor like in the case of ttu Dr .Karim promoted as a head of the department without increase in salary .
Horizontal promotion
When an employee is shifted in the same category with increase in pay responsibilities and change in designation e.g
second division assistant is promoted as first division assistant.
Vertical promotion
When an employee is shifted from a lower category to higher category with increase in pay status and responsibilities.
Bases of promotion.
Promotion based on seniority.
Seniority is based on the total length of service and is counted from the date of his appointment in the organization.
Promotion by merit.
Promotion are based on merits of employee i.e qualification ,knowledge ,skill, Honesty ,interpersonal relationship ,
effective communication and cause performance in the job.
Principle of promotion
Uniformity
Promotion policy must provide for a uniform distribution of promotional opportunities throughout the organization.
Consistency
It must be applied to all personnel concerned. consistency demand that promotion is linked with career planning of all
individual and promotion is not a sudden spurt and hoc to benefit a few individuals
Fair and impartial
Fair and impartiality in promotion ensure that only right personnel are promoted,and other factors such as family connection
 
Planned activity
Policy should ensure that promotion is undertaken as a planned activity and as a regular process than ad hoc process.
Sound basis of promotion
There should be sound basis of promotion and it must be made known to the employee.
Follow- up
There should be a suitable system of follow -up to asses how the promoted employee is working in new position.
Advantages of promotion from within the organisation
Current employees already knows the rule, regulations and culture of the organization.
Employees have understanding of how the organization operates and do not need of an induction programme.
The organization knows employees and have detailed records for proper supervision .
Allowing emloyees to move vertically and horizontally within the organization could reduce the possibility of them
looking for another job.
A positive image is created in the organization.
Offering opportunities to internal employee may boost the morale of the staff members.
Disadvantages of promotion from within the organisation
No new or fresh ideas are brought into the organization.
The job advertised may require skills not currently available within the organization.
Promotion of internal employees could cause resentment amongst other employee who may feel they deserve the post
more than the promoted employee.
The number of applicant from which to chose may be too high or limited .
There are possibilities of promoting less qualified employees than those from outside of the organization .
Lazy employee cannot suddenly change into star employee because they have been promoted.
Contiguous negative habits and behaviour by one negative employee can easily be passed on to other division.
