ACTION PROGRAM
Transportation Goals for Dallas, Texas

General Goal
Dallas must recognize and improve its as a major transportation and
communication center. In order that we may continue to grow and complete
successfully with other metropolitan regions, we should work constantly to
improve transportation and communications facilities. Within the city and the
region, people must be able to move rapidly, pleasantly, safely, and economically
from their homes to work, to schools, to shopping areas, and to recreational
and
cultural facilities. Transportation of goods within the city and region should be
efficient without interfering with the citizen’s enjoyment of his city.
Specific Goals
1. Continue to expand and improve transportation service to the metropolitan
areas and nations at reasonable rates.
2. Secure with the support of other governmental units in the region, enabling
legislation for a Transit Authority or Authorities which would :
a. Serve as large; an area initially as is practical and be design ultimately for
the entire metropolitan region. Membership would include representatives of
the areas served.
b. Study the technology of rapid transit to select the system or systems which
can best satisfy our needs.
c. Assume ownership and operation of the Dallas Transit System and extend
its services to satisfy as many needs as the Authority cab justify
economically.
d.
See to it that Dallas and other municipalities protect and, if possible
preserve at today’s price, right-of-way for future rapid transit.
e.
Consider subsidy of public transit by the metropolitan region.
3. Bring the Dallas Fort Worth airport to its fullest potential as a regional and
world air center. Developed more private aircraft and short hop commercial
facilities.
4. Maintain a perpetual list of the community’s needs in communication and take
effective action to assure postal, telephone, and telegraph services which meet
the needs.
5. Make available adequate taxi service in all parts of the city and at all hours.
6. Design transportation facilities and services to satisfy the needs of users
without dissatisfying other people. For example, when transportation changes
are needed sufficient right-of-way should be acquired to protect adjacent land.
