HATS FOR JIZO

Audience: This story is destined to primary school students. (Level 1)

Language: Emergent readers
Once upon a time there was an old man
and an old woman. They wanted to buy
lemang (glutinous rice) and rendang for
Hari Raya which would come soon.
They decided to sell their handmade
songkok and cloth to trade for some
lemang and rendang.
A few days later, the old man started in a rainy morning to town
with the songkok and the clothes. He sees a little boy shivering in
the rain by the road on his way. The poor boy wore a shabby-
looking cloth. There were torns everywhere. The old man pitied
him so much that he put one of his songkok on his head. He also
gave his cloth to the boy to keep him warm during the rain. He
even offered his own sweater to the boy.

“Take my sweater young man. This will help you to feel better”.

He could not possibly leave the boy alone and cold in the rain.
Then he went back home. His old woman came to meet him,
asking,
"How about the lemang and the rendang"

Then he told her about the little boy and said,

"We can have a good Hari Raya even without lemang and
rendang."
The old woman praised him for what he did and they were happy
about it. She said,
“light up the lampu pelita to cheer up our Raya celebration"
The next morning, they were awakened by shouts outside. When
they drew back their wooden doors to see, there was a lot of
freshly made lemang and rendang in front of the door. They were
surprised by the kind gestures of their neighbours.
