ROLE PLAY (10%)

WEEK 11
Guidelines
• Each group consists of 4 students
• Time allocation is 10-15 minutes for each group
• Apply everything that we have learnt in order to
conduct an effective reference interview such as:
– Reference Interview steps/strategies
– Verbal & nonverbal skills, gestures (paraphrasing etc)
– The usage of reference tools (any tools based on the enquiries)

The topic of discussion may includes information


searching on online databases, Research enquiries,
library briefing etc.
Guidelines
• Each group is given a set of library users:

1. 60-70 years old Professors


2. Difficult 30-40 years old researchers
3. Stubborn Drs in academic setting
4. Researchers with no knowledge in the library
5. 13-17 years old school students looking for
information (assignment matters etc.)
6. 10-12 years old kids in public library
7. Arrogant medical doctors/engineers/pensioners
Guidelines
• Kindly apply your creativity to create the
interesting atmosphere not merely a
conversation such as:
• Powerpoint presentation with background pictures of your
library, sounds/pictures of users in the library
• Nametags such as “the librarian’’/ ‘’professor A’’/Dr
‘’B’’/’’student C’’
• Piles of reference books at the reference desk, flowers at the
desk, library pamphlets etc
• Use props to illustrate type of users (status & age)such as
songkok, handbags, school badge etc
• Expressions: anger, patience etc
Guidelines
• Kindly begin your role play with introduction
on the role play settings such as:
– Team members & role
– User types
– Reference interview settings (place, time etc)

Make sure your reference interview is interesting,


good inputs, CLEAR VOICE, apply your creativity,
remember you lines/part, make jokes, facts learnt
in class etc.
